Petrol in Diesel

Alkrington Garden Village: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Alkrington Garden Village and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Our engineers will show you what the following part is. Ring us — that comes before anything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the ignition be also. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Mainway? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A tricky place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you ring, work out your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting M24 1 — that is what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has started — these three details settle the whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning run running on a liquid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Mills Hill till the penny drops close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing we ask you is about mileage rather than time. Call us. Leave the car exactly where it stands.

Petrol in the BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Tesco, somewhere around Alkrington Garden Village? Then phone us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit the bay. A technician comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws little, so these are usually the straightforward cases.

Here is what a job in the car park outside The Roebuck typically looks like. We arrive at your car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Vauxhall Astra has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, confirm it runs properly, and you pull away.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel Ford Kuga up by St Thomas More Church Hall a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave it off. The short distance really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our engineers rinse your lines instead of only draining that tank.

By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Mercedes B-Class that made it close to Alkrington Youth Centre needs your circuit purged, not cleared.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job starts at a forecourt, meaning a big part of it ends up completed on site. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you're still at Tesco that's normally where this drain gets done.

At a garage, it is spotted with your motor never run, and nowhere else does that. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Worth doing. Firing the car just for four car lengths? Don't.

Coverage near Alkrington Garden Village

Alkrington Garden Village is a residential suburb, and so we are out to the town and to the areas by it on the usual journeys: Lime Field, Moorclose, Middleton, Charlestown and Middleton Junction.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations across Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us to enquire instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere a satnav may get wrong.

The ground the page spans appears on the map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our technicians serve, and none of that asks the car to travel to us.

Alkrington Garden Village: stuck where you pulled up

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge beside Mere Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Out of the motor when it's not wise to wait there, beside it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll send our van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

Your M60 is the road which counts here, and it runs under a mile from Alkrington Garden Village. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Alkrington Garden Village

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • We clear the tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Alkrington Garden Village AdBlue removal is a separate job

Don't fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Alkrington Garden Village has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Alkrington Garden Village?

What shifts the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Alkrington Garden Village

At a petrol station in Alkrington Garden Village, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable much more regularly than motorists expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
