Allhallows: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Engine off. Keep it that way — no second on, no moving it at all. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done right where your vehicle sits, and what happens in the next few minutes settles that more than anything else. Wherever you are in Allhallows, this is how things run from now.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this sequence, all before anything else:

  • Priming the system pulls petrol from your tank toward the parts it harms, and turning the ignition on can be enough to do that. So the keys come out, and your ignition remains off completely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same mixture.
  • Hazard lights on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the staff to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. Do not crank it to shift it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to the till receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M2 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 10 miles from Allhallows, and stop somewhere safe and not pressing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

The fork in each Allhallows fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Motor not run at all?

  • The petrol is still in the tank and nowhere else.
  • Normally it is drained and purged right where the car is.
  • No spot is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.

Engine run, however briefly?

  • The fuel lines and your filter already hold petrol drawn out of the tank.
  • The high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors get it on a longer run.
  • The job grows with the mileage — lines purged, filter seen to, sometimes more.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line falls where it does. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that move the car.

Allhallows, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A little planning is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that goes round.

  • ME3 9 and the remainder of the postcode makes the best way to start telling us where you are.
  • A road name is a help: St Lukes Way, say, or whatever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, such as the one at Sainsbury's.
  • Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.
  • Tell us which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Allhallows.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either gives us how much.
  • Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far plus how hard.
  • Whose vehicle it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that is easier settled before we turn up than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works as well.

Allhallows fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these count.

  • Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere exposed? Get clear of the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it is? Stay with it.
  • No one — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.
  • Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.
  • A home-made drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond the tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous besides.
  • Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

When the van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: the answers decide the job, and that's why you get a quote after them instead of before.
  • Your tank is drained. The contaminated mixture comes from that tank.
  • If it ran, the lines are carrying petrol that has moved beyond that tank — so they are cleaned.
  • Then your filter: replaced where there is a usable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Priming comes after fresh diesel is in.
  • Starting it. Once the system is primed with new diesel, our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly.

Our technicians wait until it's running on fresh diesel. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, so the car can go straight back to normal driving.

Back on the road around Allhallows after your fuel drain

  • Started on new diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then ring us back.
  • Hold on to your paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
