Petrol in Diesel

Alsagers Bank: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Alsagers Bank or the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us and our team will tell you what happens from here before you try much else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Scot Hay Road, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Get your location ready before you ring. A postcode that starts ST7 8 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and also if the car has started — those three replies shape the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Phone us before you drive the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car outside Longport ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any wear came on the journey in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Alsagers Bank Primary Academy. They all do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it generally won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump does its work without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about. Phone with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.

A diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area by Gresley Arms holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Leave it there overnight then ring us first thing. Nothing deteriorates whilst it stands. What our technicians will want to know is if the run there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and what doesn't burn can slip past the rings then into the oil.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes C-Class left close to St. John's Alsagers Bank barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short drive does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence purging the lines instead of only draining your tank.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol getting to the injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so unfamiliar spots see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near War Memorial or not, and we'll head to the Peugeot 208.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

It kicks off at a pump, mostly. Frequently the work ends at one too. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

A filling station is the one place this gets halted before the engine has started. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth doing. Starting it just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Places our team cover near Alsagers Bank

Scot Hay, Apedale, Halmer End, Miles Green, Leycett — each of those on our trips that carry us over to Alsagers Bank itself, a rural village.

Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns across Staffordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Near the boundary, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Ring us to check rather than presuming.

This map marks the ground this page covers. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Alsagers Bank: broken down wherever you parked

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge of High Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Fine there? Wait with it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will take our van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M6 comes in, under 3 miles away from Alsagers Bank. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's sensible, stop there, and do not restart the car to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

Alsagers Bank itself

Alsagers Bank is a small village in Staffordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 215 metres, approximately 4.9 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Alsagers Bank has a population of around 557 people, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type. Alsagers Bank is close to nearby places such as Scot Hay, Apedale, and Halmer End, and is located about 139.5 miles from London.

Our visit in Alsagers Bank, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and we check that it's running smoothly.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Alsagers Bank?

The problem isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Alsagers Bank page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Alsagers Bank

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Alsagers Bank

Fuel drains on a Alsagers Bank petrol station forecourt

A fair share of this work happens there, so yes. Our engineers work at Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's salvageable far more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
