Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Alstone? Don't Start It

With your tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Alstone and the rest of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. A single ring to us will be plenty: we will explain what follows after this. Try this straight away.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it protects your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We would sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Malvern Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Before you call, work out your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting GL51 8 — that is what determines whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has been turned over. Your replies settle whatever follows.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

The work kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly it ends on site as well. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's usually where the drain gets done — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the engine still untouched. We can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the offer. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Alstone

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at light throttle uses very little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Ford Focus somewhere around Alstone, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck at Waitrose — call us. Exiting the spot is not worth another start. Your tank gets emptied where it waits, the lines rinsed, new diesel in, and you head home.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and usually it won't run, so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine starts, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be supplying. That's the catch, and it's why your diesel Mercedes C-Class will have felt completely normal coming back from Christ Church CofE Primary School. They always do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about, so nothing alerts you. Ring us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

It will fire up. It will drive off quite happily. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a thinned tank acts typically whilst wearing the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not risk the trip home from King's Arms — leave the Audi A3 and call us.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel BMW 1 Series drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Pates Avenue went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got near Christ Church needs the circuit cleared, not emptied.

Service in Alstone

These same journeys get us to Overton Park, Bays Hill, Rowanfield, Montpellier and St Pauls along with Alstone, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Gloucestershire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing about if our technicians come. Ring us and enquire instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever a satnav tends to misread.

The map is the area this page includes. All of that is ground we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive the car anywhere.

Stopped by the kerbside somewhere in Alstone?

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everybody. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Alstone Lane as you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Remain with your car when it is wise to wait in it, and out of the vehicle when it is not. Never fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the system. We will bring our van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The M5 is the one that counts here, and sits under 3 miles from Alstone. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Where's Alstone?

Alstone is a suburban area in Gloucestershire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 55 metres. Alstone lies close to the city of Gloucester, approximately 7 miles away, and is near other local areas such as Overton Park and Bays Hill. Alstone is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the region. Alstone is also within commuting distance of London, at around 88 miles away.

What happens when our technicians arrive with you around Alstone

  • The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • We clean the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Alstone?

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Alstone has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. We handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Alstone

We can't put one figure on this page honestly, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Alstone

I'm on a forecourt in Alstone. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Our engineers attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Never turn the engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
