Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Alva

Stop, and leave the engine off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the vehicle. Emptied then purged, right where it sits: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes ahead far more than on anything else. Anywhere you happen to be around Alva, here is the order things go from now.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Work through the following before anything else, in this sequence.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the parts it harms.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.
  • Hazards on. If you are at all close to moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Don't start the vehicle to shift it, however short the distance.
  • Hold on to the receipt: the grade and roughly how much are printed on it, and they're what our engineers ask about first.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M9 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 10 miles from Alva, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on to the services. Then begin at step one.

Every Alva fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

What comes next turns on one answer, and only one.

If it has not once been started:

  • Only the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • Normally it is drained and cleaned right where your car stands.
  • This is the best place to be in, and the whole reason stage one counts.

Motor run, even for a moment?

  • The fuel lines and the fuel filter now hold petrol pulled out of that tank.
  • On a longer run it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
  • The job expands with the miles — lines cleaned, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing. The components that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Alva, step by step

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Alva: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

  • The best start is a postcode — one beginning FK12 5 — for where you are.
  • The road or the car park. A road name helps — Stirling Street, or wherever you have stopped.
  • Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside The Co-operative Food, and it is easy.
  • Say what the vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Alva, so tell us which.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • The miles it covered, and how hard, if it ran at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's go-ahead for the work, and sorting it before we get there is faster than after.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Alva: what to do

In the wait, the damage comes from well-intended help — which is why these count.

  • Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, wait with it.
  • A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still does the trick, or moving it a couple of yards.
  • Something from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • A home-made drain misses your fuel already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.
  • Leave your ignition off — your windows and the radio too.

The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

  • Three questions. What got in, how much, and whether it's run. The answers set this job, which is why the quote comes after them but not before.
  • That tank is drained. The polluted mix comes from your tank.
  • Your lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and your lines are holding it.
  • Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it is changed; if not, cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, then the system is primed.
  • The first start on clean diesel. Once priming is complete, the engine is fired up and we check that it runs properly.

Until it runs on fresh diesel, our technicians stay with it. The car goes back to normal use at once, and long-term damage is very rare if it has been noticed soon.

After your fuel drain is done: driving around Alva again

  • Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — usual driving is all.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.
  • Hold on to your documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
