Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ash Estates?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Ash Estates and the rest of Surrey. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us so our engineers can show you what happens next before you try anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off too — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would rather come to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on River Ash Estate, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Keep your position ready before you dial. A postcode that starts TW17 8 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what went in, roughly how many litres, and if the motor has been started. Those responses shape everything that comes after.

Don't drive it home. The commute has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would roughly double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker. Our technicians never need you standing over your car outside Shepperton while we get it done, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Put diesel in a petrol car and mostly it won't run, so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing had happened, while your high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be giving. That is the trap, and it's why the diesel Peugeot 308 will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Ashley Church of England Primary School. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing alerts you. Ring us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Thamesmead Open Space in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Mercedes E-Class, a fill-up by Walton-on-Thames Methodist Church that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the injectors.

Flushed, not drained — that's what a diesel BMW X1 which got as far as Walton Library needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the filter, your lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where this job mostly begins, and where a fair part of it closes. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the single setting the mistake ends up caught. Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Ash Estates and the towns beside it

Ash Estates is a residential suburb, and so our vans are out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual trips: Beasleys Ait, Lower Halliford, Walton-on-Thames, Ashley Park and Upper Halliford.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for most locations around Surrey, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Close to a border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us to check rather than assuming.

Use the map for the area shown here. Every bit of that is territory our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Ash Estates: broken down where you parked

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Felix Lane because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of your car if it isn't safe to sit there, beside it when it is. Never start it up to reach a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. However inconvenient the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 3 miles out of Ash Estates, your M3 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the first exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to move it. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what we bring.

The job around Ash Estates, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled from your tank.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and since everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Ash Estates?

Do not start it: that first rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Ash Estates page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Ash Estates?

What shifts the price is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel questions from Ash Estates motorists

Fuel drains on a Ash Estates petrol station forecourt

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is salvageable far more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Leave it turned off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect.
