Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ashgill? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Ashgill and the rest of South Lanarkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone and our team can show you what follows next before you do anything else.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so don't put diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Prospect Drive, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode starting ML9 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, approximately how much, and if the motor has been started. Your replies determine all that follows.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Larkhall since first thing? The day has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that sucked thinned diesel through your pump. Phone before you drive the vehicle.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from the local primary school. They do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it mostly will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be giving. Nothing alerts you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Ring us with roughly how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.

Three answers determine much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we arrive at the vehicle in the car park outside the pub in the village. After that the polluted blend comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before you pull away.

Calling from near War Memorial? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped bay than a motor a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Dacia Sandero close to Hareleeshill Sports Barn and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A big chunk of this work ends up completed at a forecourt, as that is where it mostly begins. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere except a garage can this be caught with your engine still unrun. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where your car is.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Worth it. Firing it for four car lengths? Never.

Can our engineers reach your side of Ashgill?

Ashgill is a village, so our technicians go out to the town and to the areas near it on the same runs: Dalserf, Shawsburn, Swinhill, Rosebank and Hareleeshill.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns in South Lanarkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on a border or somewhere your phone struggles. Call us to check.

That map shows the area the page covers. We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Ashgill: stuck wherever you parked

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge beside Whinknowe, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the car to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However difficult the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the local M74 matters, under a mile out of Ashgill. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

A little about Ashgill

Ashgill is a village in South Lanarkshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 122 metres. Ashgill lies approximately 15 miles southeast of Glasgow and is surrounded by nearby places such as Dalserf, Shawsburn, and Swinhill. Ashgill has a population of around 1051 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

Our call-out in Ashgill, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • Out comes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that caused the trouble.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Ashgill?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue beneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Ashgill page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Ashgill costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We can't put one price on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Ashgill drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Ashgill?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Our technicians visit Asda and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more often than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave it shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect.
