Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ashton Gate?
With the tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Ashton Gate and the rest of Bristol, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our technicians can show you what your next move will be. Phone — that happens ahead of all else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition is left off too — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we would much rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Raleigh Road, put your hazards on and keep it there.
- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning BS3 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus if your car has been turned over. Those replies decide all that comes after.
Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt
A large portion of the job gets finished at a forecourt, as that's where it usually kicks off. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Harvest Energy? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our technicians work, and often.
Nowhere else except a garage can this be stopped with your motor still unstarted. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Attendants will normally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the help. Cranking it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.
The call our engineers like sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now switched off outside The Food Warehouse. What we're actually asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.
Three replies settle much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the car in the car park by The Rising Sun. After that the polluted mix comes out of that tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before you pull away.
Normal on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how the drive to Bristol Bowling Club went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Audi A4 drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, turn off then phone us.
About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster parked close to Saint Francis Centre barely two streets on. Phone us, and leave it off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines rather than only clearing that tank.
No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven once more before somebody phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now waiting near Ashton Gate Stadium. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than an engine giving up. Switch off. Ring us.
Areas our team cover around Ashton Gate
These same runs bring us to Bedminster, Southville, Bower Ashton, Ashton Vale and Hotwells besides Ashton Gate, which is a residential suburb.
Our technicians still come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Bristol, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near the border, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Ring us and enquire rather than guessing.
Use this map for the ground shown here. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.
Ashton Gate: stranded wherever you stopped
A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge of Dampier Road or at a lay-by with your hazards on.
Whether you sit beside the motor or stand clear of it turns on if being in it seems wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: restart it to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We will send the van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is far better than pressing on.
Driven it already? Stop, and check below
Here is where the local M32 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Ashton Gate. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never restart it to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
Ashton Gate itself
Ashton Gate is a suburban area in Bristol, situated on the riverside with a low elevation of around 8 metres. Ashton Gate is located close to the city centre, approximately 1.1 miles from Bristol, and is near other nearby places such as Bedminster, Southville, and Bower Ashton. Ashton Gate has a population of around 10505 people and is predominantly composed of terraced housing.
Our job around Ashton Gate, step by step
- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
- Our technicians drain the tank of the tainted mixture.
- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The motor is fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
Then it is ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Ashton Gate?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Ashton Gate page. Both are ours to handle.
Ashton Gate costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what changes it:
- This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Ashton Gate
Fuel drains on a Ashton Gate petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at Sainsbury Fuel and the other forecourts locally regularly.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more often than people assume.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the engine switched off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
