Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ashurst Wood? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Ashurst Wood and the rest of West Sussex. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone so our team will tell you what follows next before you do any more.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start it — and don't depend on it when it does start. Here is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just will not run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It's not fine. It is eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Chapel Lane? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An odd location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you dial, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning RH19 3 — that's what determines whether the van shows up or circles.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired — these three answers decide the whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Don't run it home. The journey in has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Passat, and the journey back would about double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car outside East Grinstead while our technicians get on, and we would far rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.

Twenty to nine. Outside Ashurst Wood Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave your engine alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Dacia Duster or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

What our technicians will ask is whether that trip there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked in the parking area at The Maypole Inn holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades as it sits, so leave the car overnight and phone first thing.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it passes through — that is the entire process. It accounts for the ordinary John Pears Recreation Ground call too: a diesel BMW 5 Series that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

The filter, your lines, your pump and its rail: that is where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the damage rests by this point, and a diesel Skoda Superb that made it close to Village Centre & Council Offices needs the circuit cleared instead of emptied.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Much of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a big portion of that is completed at one. Still at Tesco? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the only spot it is stopped. Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the help. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Can we cover your end of Ashurst Wood?

The same rounds bring us to Forest Row, Highgate, Sunnyside, Tompsets Bank and East Grinstead as well as Ashurst Wood, which is a rural village.

There are pages for nearly all towns in West Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing about whether we come. Call us and check rather than guessing, particularly when you are on the boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

The map is the ground the page includes. The car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped on the kerbside somewhere around Ashurst Wood?

Not everybody has a chance to stop anywhere safe. A common call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside Wall Hill Road or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Safe there? Remain by it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Our van coming to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The local M23 is the road which matters here, and runs under 10 miles from Ashurst Wood. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

Where is Ashurst Wood?

Ashurst Wood is a small village in West Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of around 132 metres. Ashurst Wood lies approximately 28 miles south of London and 21 miles north of Brighton and Hove, near the villages of Forest Row and Highgate. Ashurst Wood has a population of around 1025 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Ashurst Wood remains a quiet residential community with a rural character.

When we reach you around Ashurst Wood: what follows

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • The tank is cleared completely.
  • Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what created the issue.
  • Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ashurst Wood is a different problem

Never crank it: that opening step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Ashurst Wood page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Ashurst Wood

One figure would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Ashurst Wood

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ashurst Wood?

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent we attend JET and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Do not switch the car on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
