Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Astmoor

Do not start your engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Astmoor and the rest of Cheshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us before anything else begins, so you will know what follows after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Don't fire it up. Started regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Leave the car's ignition be too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and our team would sooner drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Davy Road, turn those hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode that starts WA7 1 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has run — these three facts shape the whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you went is what our engineers ask about, not how long the car has been sitting — and here is why. Diesel does two roles on its way through a motor: it burns, and before burning it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick fill-up on the trip in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Renault Clio sitting at Runcorn since quarter past eight means those few miles were travelled with your pump working on a liquid robbed of most of its protection. Phone then leave the vehicle just where it sits.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call we like goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now turned off outside Lidl.

Twenty to nine. Outside Astmoor Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch the hazard lights on, leave your engine alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Mercedes C-Class or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Rarely the issue, the location. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Brook Chapel, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Kia Sportage gets drained, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — because by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our technicians flush it, and take your filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you'll get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Hyundai Tucson near St Augustine's and it'll start, which is exactly why the advice sounds sensible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Most of this work starts at the pump, so a big share of it gets completed there. If you're still on the forecourt at PEVA Fuels, that is normally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

No place other than the forecourt can it be spotted with the motor still unstarted. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.

The attendants will usually offer to roll it clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Cranking the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Can we serve your end of Astmoor?

Those same trips get us to Castlefields, Stenhills, The Brow, Halton Village and Halton Brook as well as Astmoor, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and the majority of locations around Cheshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Ring us to ask rather than presuming — borders especially, and wherever the satnav might misread.

That map shows the patch this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground our engineers serve, and none of it requires the car to travel to us.

Astmoor: broken down wherever you parked

The chance to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge on Dewar Court, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay with the car or move clear of it turns on if sitting there feels safe. Don't fire it up to get to a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the system. A van coming to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the car than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull in, and check below

This is where the local M56 comes into it — under 3 miles from Astmoor. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not restart it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction then turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Where's Astmoor?

Astmoor is a suburban area located on the coast of Cheshire, with an elevation of 14 metres above sea level. Astmoor sits near the cities of Liverpool and Chester, and is close to nearby places such as Castlefields and Stenhills. Astmoor has a population of approximately 1303 people, and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Astmoor is situated about 12 miles from Liverpool, and is around 167 miles from London.

What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you in Astmoor

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled out of that tank.
  • We purge your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what created the issue.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Astmoor is a distinct job

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Astmoor page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Astmoor?

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Astmoor drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Astmoor. Can you drain the car here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more often than people assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave the engine turned off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
