Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Backbower?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Backbower or the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us so our technicians will tell you what comes after that before you attempt anything else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And once started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Backbower Lane? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A tricky location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting SK14 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has been run. Those replies decide all that follows.

How many miles you went is what our engineers ask about, not how long the motor has been standing — and here's why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a fast refuel on the road in, the penny dropping somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Godley since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were driven with your pump running on a fluid drained of most of its protection. Phone then leave the vehicle exactly where it is.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a frantic morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your Dacia Duster feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Gee Cross Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

Three replies determine most of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at your car in the car park outside The Buxton Inn. After that the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Mercedes E-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and the system bled, our technicians start the car and confirm it runs smoothly before you drive away.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfilled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near Zion Congregational Church, then leave the restarting alone.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 2008 that got near Studio 9 needs the system purged, not cleared.

Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Most of this work begins at the pump, so a large chunk of it is completed there. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the only setting it gets stopped. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it just to shift four car lengths is not.

Backbower and the areas near it

Being a residential suburb, Backbower has a regular visit, whilst the areas round about come along on that same round: Gee Cross and Godley Hill, Hyde and Werneth Low, Godley.

Our engineers still come. The names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations in Greater Manchester, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Call us and enquire rather than presuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere your phone tends to misread.

Check this map for the area shown here. Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the roadside in Backbower

Some people find no suitable spot to pull in at all. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge of Lilly Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the vehicle while it's not sensible to wait inside, by it when it is. Never start up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system. A technician driving to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where the M67 comes in — under a mile away from Backbower. A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Never restart it to move it. Come off at the first safe junction and switch off. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring changes.

Backbower itself

Backbower is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 7.8 miles east of Manchester city centre. Backbower sits at an elevation of 157 metres, amidst the rolling hills and valleys of the North West region. Backbower is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the area's historical development patterns. Backbower is close to nearby places such as Gee Cross, Godley Hill, and Hyde, forming part of the wider urban landscape.

What our engineers do when our engineers get to you in Backbower

  • Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • We drain your tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it is turned on, we make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Backbower is a separate problem

Never start it: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal around Backbower has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Backbower

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Backbower drivers

Fuel drains on a Backbower petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's consent our engineers visit Morrisons and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more commonly than motorists assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Standing next to it?

Turned off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Emptying wrongly fuelled motors, Backbower and the rest of Greater Manchester, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
