Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Backlands

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Backlands and the remainder of Moray, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Just one ring to us is sufficient: our technicians will show you what happens from here. Do it first.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you do not start the vehicle, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it protects your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.
  • Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd rather drive to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on New Street, turn the hazards on and keep it there.
  • Before you ring, work out your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting IV30 5 — that's what decides whether our van arrives or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the motor has fired — these three replies determine the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Never take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the drive back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf outside Elgin while the work gets done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone us.

Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to Hopeman Golf Club, it is doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, clattering: that is a misfilled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what is wrong. Never restart the car to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, close to Hopeman Parish Church or anywhere else.

A person confident will tell you to drain the vehicle then put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Ford Kuga near Hopeman War Memorial and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is suck it back through your pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets rinsed, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that only starts.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where this job often begins, and where a fair share of that ends. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where this drain takes place.

At the forecourt, it gets stopped with the motor never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the assistance. Starting it just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Coverage in Backlands

Being a coastal area, Backlands sees a routine call, and its neighbours round about go along on that same journey: Hopeman and Cummingston, St Aethans and Bank of Roseisle, Duffus.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most locations in Moray have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Assuming is the thing to resist, above all on the border or anywhere your satnav fails. Ring us and check.

Use this map for the ground shown here. The lot is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Backlands: stranded wherever you stopped

A chance to stop anywhere suitable does not fall to everyone. A routine call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge of Clark Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Out of the car while it isn't safe to wait inside, with it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. We will bring our van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for your car that's a lot better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where your M90 counts, over 50 miles from Backlands. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

A little about Backlands

Backlands is a coastal locality in Moray, situated near the towns of Hopeman and Cummingston, with St Aethans also in the vicinity. Backlands has a population of around 1279 people, primarily residing in detached houses. Backlands is located at a low elevation of 18 metres, close to the sea, and is approximately 33 miles from the city of Inverness. Backlands is a relatively small community, set within the wider Moray landscape.

What happens when we get to you in Backlands

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • We purge your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's left in the system isn't what created the trouble.
  • We put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running smoothly.

That leaves the car ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Backlands is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't start it — yet this problem is not. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Backlands has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Backlands?

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

Backlands drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Backlands, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Do not turn the car back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
