Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Baldovan?

Do not fire up the motor. While the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Baldovan and the remainder of Angus, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before everything else begins, and you will know what follows from there.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That's why you don't start the car, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so do not add diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Baldovan Road? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Keep your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts DD3 0 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has started — those three answers settle your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning run working on a liquid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Dundee until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered plenty, which is why the thing our engineers put to you is about miles instead of hours. Phone us. Keep the vehicle precisely where it sits.

Someone will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at the local primary school is an inconvenience; the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter then into your pump. Leave it, let people moan, then ring us.

Here is what a job in the car park by Nine Maidens normally looks like. We arrive at the car, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three replies determine most of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of the tank, the lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the system is primed. Then we start it, make sure it runs smoothly, and you set off.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Because the pump is upstream of your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Ford Kuga near St Luke's Cafe Church.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full the tank was in a car collected two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Volvo XC60 by Downfield Park.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Baldovan

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

It begins at the pump, usually. Often enough it ends on site as well. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the station's consent, that's a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the only spot it gets stopped. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The attendants will normally help you move it clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't warrant cranking it.

Do we reach your corner of Baldovan?

Baldovan is a rural hamlet, so we get out to the town and to the villages by it on those same journeys: Strathmartine, Downfield, Brackens, Trottick and Bridgefoot.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all places in Angus, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Contact us and ask.

Use our map for the patch covered on this page. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Baldovan: stranded where you stopped

Not everyone has the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Pitcairn Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Sit by your car when it's wise to sit in it, yet out of it if it isn't. Do not fire it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to an awkward location, and that's no bother for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 25 miles from Baldovan, the local M90 is what counts now. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

A bit about Baldovan

Baldovan is a small coastal hamlet in Angus, situated near the city of Dundee and overlooking the surrounding countryside from an elevation of 79 metres. Baldovan is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located close to nearby places such as Strathmartine, Downfield, and Brackens. Baldovan has a population of approximately 834 residents and is within easy reach of Dundee's amenities.

What comes next when our engineers arrive with you around Baldovan

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • That tank is drained completely.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the issue, and so the lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Baldovan AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Baldovan has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Baldovan

What moves the figure is listed below, as this job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Baldovan drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Baldovan petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we visit Tesco and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more commonly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
