Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ballymoney? Don't Start It
Don't fire up your engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Ballymoney and the rest of County Antrim, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before anything else starts, so you'll see what follows from there.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Don't fire it up — and do not depend on it when it fires up. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It is not okay. It's eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for just those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would sooner get to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Wallace Cottages, turn your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
- Our van turning up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting BT53 6, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
- What got in, roughly how much, and also whether the car has started — these three answers decide the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?
The job kicks off at the pump, typically. Often enough the work wraps up on site too. If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.
Before your motor has started — a garage is the single setting the mistake is caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key.
Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking it to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.
The complicated part is the bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that settles whether our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at the local shops, mention how much room there's about you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers attend regularly. Should there be no room to work alongside the diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend exits your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have gradually made a bigger job of what was simply a vehicle sitting still.
You set off at the end, once our engineers have started the engine and made sure it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park outside the pub in the village, the contaminated fuel comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we reach the car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.
Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and call us. Fine on the way out to the green space at the edge of the village, flat on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Nissan Qashqai travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Focus left near the centre hardly two streets on. Call us, and leave the vehicle off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines instead of only emptying the tank.
Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by a street just off the centre or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better location.
Do our engineers serve your end of Ballymoney?
Being a town, Ballymoney gets a regular visit, while the areas nearby go along on that same round: Balnamore and Bendooragh, Finvoy and Dervock, Ballybogy.
Our engineers do come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations in County Antrim, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Presuming is the thing to skip, above all on a border or anywhere a satnav fails. Phone to ask.
The patch this page covers appears on this map. All of that is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.
Broken down by the roadside in Ballymoney
Not everyone finds a sensible spot to stop. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge beside B842, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than an odd one.
Okay where you are? Stay with it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Do not fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into your fuel system. However inconvenient the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved
This is where the M77 comes into it — over 50 miles from Ballymoney. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Pull off at the first safe junction, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Our call-out in Ballymoney, step by step
- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Your tank is cleared completely.
- What is left in your system should not be what created the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running correctly.
At that point it is ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.
Ballymoney AdBlue removal is a separate job
Do not start it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
AdBlue removal around Ballymoney has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.
Ballymoney prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Ballymoney drivers
I am on a forecourt in Ballymoney. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer there and then.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Still with your car?
The engine remains off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let it stay that way. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
