Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ballyrory?
If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Ballyrory or the remainder of County Londonderry, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us before all else begins, so you will hear what comes after that.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Never crank it. Fired up regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. People get that confused. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
- Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Rock Street, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.
- Before you ring, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting BT47 4 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the car has fired. Those three facts decide your whole call-out.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?
The work begins at the pump, typically. Often enough it wraps up on site too. If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where this drain gets done — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.
No place but a forecourt can the mistake be halted with the motor still cold. We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.
Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Our technicians will come out to you, empty that tank, clean those fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel BMW 3 Series around Ballyrory and you're stranded at the local shops with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and do not start the car a second time to exit the spot. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any diesel, so such jobs tend to be the straightforward jobs.
Somebody will tell you to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at the local primary school is an inconvenience; the same car started three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through the filter and into your pump. Leave it, let them grumble, and give us a call.
A diesel Peugeot 3008 sitting in the parking area at the pub in the village with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone drives it home. Park it overnight then call us next morning. Nothing degrades as it stands. What we will want to know is whether that run there was short and chilly, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and anything that does not burn can slip past the piston rings then into the engine oil.
Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by the centre a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave the vehicle off. The short hop genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has reached the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our technicians clean the lines rather than only clearing the tank.
Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 near the far end of the built-up part and your engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through the pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Phone us. The circuit gets rinsed, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that only starts.
Ballyrory plus the areas next to it
As a small village, Ballyrory gets a regular call, whilst the areas round about go along on that same run: Straidarran and Claudy, Foreglen and Park, Killaloo.
Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations across County Londonderry have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Near the border, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.
The patch the page covers sits on the map. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car does not need to come to us.
Stuck by the kerbside near Ballyrory
Some people find no safe place to pull over whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge on Crom Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.
Whether you stay beside your car or step away from it rests on if staying nearby looks safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Our van coming to an inconvenient spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and your car has rolled
This is where the M77 comes in, over 50 miles from Ballyrory. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Never start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

Once our engineers get to you around Ballyrory: what we do
- We establish what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- Out flows the polluted fuel.
- We clean the lines and clear the filter, and so what's left in the system is not what started the problem.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- It is started with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.
The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. We do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Ballyrory?
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this fault under it's a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Ballyrory page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Ballyrory
One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Ballyrory motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ballyrory?
Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and the car, still together?
Your engine stays off.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
Throughout County Londonderry and around Ballyrory: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
