Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Balmossie

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Balmossie and the rest of Dundee City. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Our technicians shall show you what the next move will be. Contact us — this goes ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't fire it up — and don't trust it if it does start. This is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It is not all right. It's wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off as well: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those components.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Balmossie Green, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • The van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting DD5 3, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you phone.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has been turned over. The responses shape all that follows.

Quarter past eight. A hurried fill on the way in. Somewhere around eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Renault Megane has sat outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone us then keep it where it is. What is key is the trip in, since diesel both ignites and — before that — greases your pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles ran your pump on a fluid robbed of a great deal of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the question about miles rather than hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are till our engineers turn up.

Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, running late, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a frantic morning dash demands plenty.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes C-Class parked by Panmurefield Baptist Centre (Broughty Ferry Baptist Church) hardly two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines rather than only clearing your tank.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel Dacia Duster near Broughty Ferry Tennis Club. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there anyway. We ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Ford Kuga that made it by David Lloyd Clubs needs your circuit flushed, not cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Balmossie

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

It begins at a forecourt, typically. Regularly the job ends there as well. The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the single place the mistake gets halted before your motor has run. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the offer. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Parts our team serve in Balmossie

Balmossie is a residential suburb, and so our team get out to it and to the areas by it on the same rounds: Barnhill, Drumsturdy, Kingennie, Baldovie and Murroes.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most towns across Dundee City have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Phone and check rather than assuming, above all when you are on a boundary or somewhere a satnav can't find.

This map is the area the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is ground we cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

Stopped by the roadside somewhere around Balmossie?

The opportunity to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Balmossie Terrace, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Stay beside the car when it is safe to wait in it, yet out of it when it is not. Do not start up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system. However inconvenient the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull in, and read this

This is where the M90 comes into it — under 25 miles away from Balmossie. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what we bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A little about Balmossie

Balmossie is a coastal suburban area in Dundee City, situated approximately 5 miles from Dundee and overlooking the North Sea. Balmossie has a relatively low elevation of 61 metres and is characterised by detached housing. Balmossie is close to nearby places such as Barnhill, Drumsturdy, and Kingennie, and is home to around 1172 residents.

What our technicians do when we reach you in Balmossie

  • Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • We empty that tank of the tainted fuel.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Balmossie is a distinct job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — do not start the car — yet the issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Balmossie page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Balmossie?

We cannot put one number on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel questions from Balmossie motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Balmossie. Can you drain the car here?

A large part of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians attend Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally routinely.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't turn it on again.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect.

Throughout Dundee City and in Balmossie: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
