Bank Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Bank Top and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Our technicians will tell you what the next step will be. Ring us — it comes ahead of anything else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started all the same? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Foundry Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started motor.
  • Before you dial, gather your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning OL8 1 — that is what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, about how much, plus if the car has been turned over. Those replies settle whatever happens next.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would roughly double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside Mills Hill perfectly safely. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our technicians work isn't necessary.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at easy throttle draws little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio somewhere around Bank Top, a boot full of shopping, and you sat outside Heron Foods — phone us. Leaving that space isn't worth another start. That tank gets cleared where it waits, the lines flushed, clean diesel in, and you drive home.

Move it out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags at St Patrick's RC Primary School, a Voluntary Academy, a misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past your filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Give us a call.

Three things help when you call from near Ross Street Masjid: which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, so the place itself is rarely the problem — we'd far rather deal with a tight parking bay than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your BMW 5 Series, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put clean fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of it is sitting in your lines instead of in your tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — near Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfuelled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what is wrong.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a big portion of that ends up finished there. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the single setting this is halted. Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Do we reach your part of Bank Top?

Being a residential suburb, Bank Top sees a routine visit, while the areas nearby go along on the same run: Oldham and Frank Hill, Primrose Bank and Westwood, North Moor.

There are pages for nearly all locations across Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing about whether we come. Assuming is the habit to resist, especially on the boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Contact us to enquire.

That map shows the ground the page spans. All of it is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns across Bank Top

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Crossbank Street since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Fine there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. A technician coming to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

Here is where the local Broadway counts, under 3 miles from Bank Top. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the car to move it. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

A bit about Bank Top

Bank Top is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 6.6 miles northeast of Manchester city centre. Bank Top is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the area's historical development patterns. Bank Top is located near other local places, including Oldham and Primrose Bank.

What we do when we reach you around Bank Top

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • Our engineers rinse the lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running correctly.

That has the car ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Bank Top

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Bank Top has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Bank Top

We cannot put one price on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Bank Top motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Bank Top. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and the car, still together?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
