Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Beaconside?

Do not start the engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, across Beaconside and the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Call us before all else happens, and you'll know what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. People have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so do not add diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Garrod Square? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts ST16 3, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • What was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has run — these three answers determine the entire visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the way back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over the Renault Clio at Stafford whilst the work goes on, and we would far rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Twenty to nine. Outside St John's CofE Primary Academy. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch the hazard lights on, leave the motor alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush demands a great deal of that.

Risk the journey home from Metropolitan Bar? Don't. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank runs generally whilst grinding the components the fuel should be protecting. Leave the BMW 3 Series and phone us.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, knocking: that's a misfuelled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what's wrong. Never start it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, close to Nanak Sar Gurdawara or anywhere else.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the tip you will get, normally from someone sure of themselves, and it is half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Audi A6 by Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR3 and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What happens next is the trouble: the engine at once draws the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being repaired and the vehicle merely starting.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work mostly starts, and where a fair portion of that ends. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's generally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

Nowhere except the forecourt can this be spotted with your engine still untouched. Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Firing the car just for four car lengths? Never.

Coverage in Beaconside

Littleworth, Kingston Hill, Stafford, Broadeye, Forebridge — all of these on our trips that carry us across to Beaconside itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places around Staffordshire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Phone and check rather than assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere your phone might struggle with.

That map shows the ground this page covers. The car never needs to travel to us. We work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the roadside in Beaconside

The chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Stirling Court, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you sit beside the motor or step clear of it depends on whether staying there seems sensible. Never start it up to reach a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on does your car far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky spot, and that's no problem for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 3 miles out of Beaconside, the local M6 is what counts now. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Beaconside itself

Beaconside is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated near the River Sow and close to the city of Stafford. Beaconside has a mix of semi-detached housing and is located at an elevation of around 85 metres, with nearby places including Littleworth and Kingston Hill. Beaconside is part of the wider West Midlands region, but remains a distinct community with its own character. Beaconside is also within commuting distance of larger cities, with Lichfield just 14.5 miles away and London approximately 123 miles to the southeast.

What happens when our technicians reach you around Beaconside

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • Out flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.

At that point it's ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Beaconside is a separate job

Never crank it: that first step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Beaconside page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Beaconside

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Beaconside

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Beaconside?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Regularly, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the car?

That engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists assume.

Across Staffordshire and around Beaconside: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
