Petrol in Diesel

Beck Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Beck Hill and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Phone before anything else begins, and you will know what comes from there.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And once started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Prince's Street, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.
  • A van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning BD6 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run — the three facts settle the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning run labouring on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Low Moor till it dawns on you at about eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed plenty, which is why the thing we put to you is about mileage rather than hours. Call us. Keep the vehicle exactly where it stands.

We're in car parks like the one at Tesco often, and it is almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height barrier at the entrance, which decides if our van reaches you at all. So say how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If there's no room to work alongside that Renault Clio, we shift it without your engine. That's not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a car moved twice for a nicer spot is silently a worse job than one nobody touched.

Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Farfield Recreation Ground, look at your tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Audi A4 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.

Hardly ever the issue, the place. On-street is the commonest location our technicians work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from close to St. Michael & All Angels, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Mercedes C-Class gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines flushed and clean fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

The filter, your lines, your pump and the rail: that is where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel BMW 1 Series that got by Woodside Village Centre needs the system flushed rather than cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Beck Hill

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of this work starts at the pump, meaning a big portion of it is finished there. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's consent, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the one spot this is stopped. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where the car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will normally happily move the car out from the pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't merit cranking the motor.

Will our technicians cover your end of Beck Hill?

Beck Hill is a residential suburb, and so our technicians are out to the town and to the areas around it on the same journeys: Low Bentley, Woodside, Buttershaw, Shelf and Wibsey Slack.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations around West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Contact us and enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever the satnav tends to misread.

That map is the patch this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to come to us.

Stopped on the kerbside somewhere in Beck Hill?

Some drivers get no safe spot to pull over whatsoever. A common call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Boltby Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you sit by your car or step clear of it depends on whether being in it feels sensible. Don't restart it to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system. We will send our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for your car that's much better than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 3 miles out of Beck Hill, the M606 is what matters here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

A little about Beck Hill

Beck Hill is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Bradford in West Yorkshire, situated near the river. Beck Hill sits at an elevation of 251 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Beck Hill is close to nearby places such as Low Bentley, Woodside, and Buttershaw, and is approximately 2.8 miles from Bradford city centre.

What comes next when we reach you around Beck Hill

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • We rinse the lines and clear your filter, so what's left in your system isn't what created the trouble.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it is turned on, our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Beck Hill?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not start the vehicle — but this issue isn't. Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Beck Hill page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Beck Hill?

One figure would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Beck Hill

I'm on a forecourt in Beck Hill. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is how it remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
