Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Beckenham? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Beckenham and the rest of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. One call to us will be enough: our team shall show you what follows after this. Do that right away.
What to do first about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start it. And once started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.
- Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Bromley Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
- A van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning BR3 1, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
- Three details shape your whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate measure of it, plus whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the way in. Around eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan has sat at Beckenham Junction for three hours. Call us and keep it where it stands. What counts is the trip in, as diesel both combusts and — before that — protects the pump and the fuel injectors, but petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles ran the pump on a liquid drained of a great deal of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the question about mileage instead of hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are till our technicians arrive.
Car parks like the one at M&S Foodhall are a spot our technicians visit all the time, and your fuel is seldom the awkward part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles if our van can get to you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is pointing. When our technicians cannot work beside your diesel Skoda Octavia we will move the car without starting it — and that is not fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and draws more of that blend out of your tank and on to your pump, and so a motor shuffled twice into a roomier bay has quietly become a harder job than one left just where it stopped.
Simple job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai parked outside Kelsey House Bar & Kitchen with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park the car then phone us once it is light. Expect a query about the trip there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can work past the piston rings then into the engine oil.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Audi A4 drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and flat on the way back is how the drive to Thorton Green went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and phone us.
Your pump waits ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one sheds travels on with the fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Ford Focus where it is by Lych Gate.
At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
The work begins at a forecourt, generally. Quite often it wraps up there as well. Still at Texaco? Then that's typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.
At a forecourt, this is halted with the motor never run, and no place else does that. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where the car sits.
The staff will usually happily wheel it away from the pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Beckenham plus the areas beside it
New Beckenham, Eden Park, Bromley Park, Elmers End, Park Langley — every one of them on our journeys that carry us across to Beckenham as well, a small village.
There are pages for the majority of places around Greater London, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing at all about whether we come. Presuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us and check.
The ground the page spans appears on this map. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs around Beckenham
The opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge beside Church Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.
Whether you wait beside the car or move away from it turns on whether staying in it seems sensible. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward spot, and that's no bother for us.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
This is where the local M25 comes in — under 10 miles from Beckenham. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.
Get off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It changes what we bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

What happens when we reach you in Beckenham
- We find out what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- We empty your tank of the polluted mixture.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
- The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.
From there, you're ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Beckenham?
Never crank it: that first rule applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
AdBlue removal around Beckenham has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.
Beckenham pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.
Beckenham motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Beckenham?
Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable much more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Never turn your engine on again.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
