Bedlam: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, and keep your engine off — not on, and not for a second to move it. The coming few minutes decide it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run normally amounts to emptying then purging, on the spot. Below is the sequence from this point, anywhere around Bedlam you happen to be.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Work through these before anything else, in this sequence.

  • Priming the fuel system pulls petrol from your tank towards the components it harms, and turning the ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys come out, and the ignition remains off completely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it only leaves you with extra of the same mixture.
  • Near moving traffic? Then your hazards go on before everything else, so your car is easy to spot.
  • By hand, never under the motor: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you roll, however short the miles.
  • The first question you will be asked is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and the till receipt says both. Keep it.

If you were still on the move when you realised, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the A1(M), under 15 miles from Bedlam, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.

The fork in every Bedlam fuel drain: has it run yet?

What happens after this rests on one answer, and only one.

If your engine has not run at all:

  • Just the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • The job is a drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle is.
  • This is the best position to be in, and the reason step one matters.

If the engine has run, even briefly:

  • Out of that tank, past your filter, into the lines: that is how far that petrol has travelled.
  • A longer run takes it right through to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.
  • Mileage is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that move it.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Bedlam, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Bedlam: what we need

Whether the technician goes round or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

  • The best place to start is a postcode — one beginning HG3 5 — for where you are.
  • The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Old Church Lane, or wherever you have pulled up.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside The Dales Market Corner, for example — and it is much easier to find.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Bedlam page.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever tells us how much.
  • If it has run, how far plus how heavily — as well as if it has run at all.
  • Settle who owns the vehicle before our engineers turn up: some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise this work, and doing it quicker first.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then. Email works too if it can wait, with the car parked at home, going nowhere.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Bedlam: what to do

Stick to these: well-meant help causes the harm during the wait.

  • Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.
  • Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.
  • No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond your tank.
  • Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Our price comes after three questions, not before them — what got in, how much, and whether it's run — since the replies shape this job.
  • Emptying it is how that blend gets taken out of the tank.
  • Flushing the fuel lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past the tank, inside the lines themselves.
  • Where the vehicle has a usable filter, it's changed; otherwise, cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and your system is primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the fuel system, then make sure that it is running properly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our technicians leave. If it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare, and the vehicle returns to normal use straight away.

Bedlam, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There is nothing special to do after it's been started on fresh fuel.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the paperwork.
  • Next time, go by the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
