Petrol in Diesel

Bedmond: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Bedmond and the rest of Hertfordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers will tell you what the following move will be. Ring us — this goes before everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Never crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Drivers get that muddled. It isn't okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Millhouse Lane, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Our van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning WD5 0, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you phone.
  • Three facts settle your whole job: the liquid you poured in, the rough amount involved, plus whether anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

It kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the job finishes there as well. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at Primrose Hill Service Station that's usually where the drain happens.

A filling station is the one place it gets spotted before your motor has started. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where your car sits.

The staff will normally help you roll the car away from the pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing. Starting the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bedmond

Every start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that blend out of that tank and toward the pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a better space has silently turned into a worse job than one left just where it stopped. So if we cannot work next to your diesel Renault Clio, we shift it without firing it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Costcutter our engineers visit often, and the fuel is rarely the complicated part: the bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit at the way in determining if a van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way your car points.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both prepared. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Bedmond Academy — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, since behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Piecorner Wood in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of it.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off on with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Dacia Duster near The Church of Ascension.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A6, a fill-up by Abbots Langley Library that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

Can our technicians cover your side of Bedmond?

Those same journeys carry us to Sergehill, Pimlico, Abbots Langley, Waterdale and Appspond besides Bedmond, which is a rural village.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Hertfordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Assuming is the mistake to skip, above all on a boundary or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Phone to enquire.

The patch the page covers is on the map. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car doesn't need to move to us.

Bedmond: stuck wherever you stopped

Some drivers get no safe place to pull in at all. A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge on Woodland Way or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you wait by your car or move away from it turns on if staying in it feels sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: restart it to reach somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. However inconvenient the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the M25 matters, under a mile from Bedmond. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A little about Bedmond

Bedmond is a small village in Hertfordshire, situated approximately 3.7 miles from St Albans and 19.2 miles from London. Bedmond sits in a rural area at an elevation of around 138 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Bedmond is close to nearby places such as Sergehill and Abbots Langley, and is part of the wider commuter belt around London.

What happens when we get to you in Bedmond

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • After it is fired up, our technicians make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Bedmond AdBlue removal is a separate matter

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — never fire it up — but this fault isn't. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Bedmond page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Bedmond prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Bedmond

Fuel drains on a Bedmond petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians attend Harvest energy and the other forecourts around town regularly.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more often than drivers assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people fear.
