Belliver: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Not for a second, and not for moving it: the engine remains off. Stop there. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and nothing decides that as much as these next few minutes do. Anywhere you are around Belliver, here is the order things go from here.
Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
In this order, all before anything else:
- The keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime your fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of your tank towards the components it harms. Keep it off completely.
- A fuller tank of the same mix is all topping up leaves you, because it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.
- Hazards on. If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car easy to see before you do anything else.
- The staff will usually help you roll it away from the petrol pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — not on the engine, even for a couple of yards.
- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the receipt says both. Keep it.
On the M5, under 50 miles from Belliver, the next exit is the location to come off; anywhere, the first sensible place to stop. Don't push on to the services. Then go back to step one.
Belliver fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?
Everything after this point depends on one answer.
Not run, not even briefly:
- No place but that tank: that is where the petrol yet is.
- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
- This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.
Motor run, however briefly?
- Some petrol has left your tank by now, passed through your filter, and reached the lines.
- Run it farther and that petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
- Lines flushed, the fuel filter seen to, and sometimes more: this job grows as the mileage does.
The line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. In your tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. Pump that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.
What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Belliver
A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a technician that goes round.
- Your location: a postcode starting PL6 7 works best.
- Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that is Boulter Close or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — such as the one at Belliver Stores.
- Make and model of the vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Belliver page.
- The amount: your receipt's litres, or else how long you held the nozzle in.
- Whether it's run. And if it has, how far and how heavily.
- Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for the work, and getting it before we arrive is quicker than afterwards.
Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .
Belliver fuel drain on its way? While you wait
During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these matter.
- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere dangerous? Get away from the traffic then wait away from it. Fine where it sits? Wait with it.
- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the car a short way.
- None of that gets the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.
- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains where it is regardless.
- Not for your radio, not for the windows: your ignition stays off.
Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time
- Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it's run. The answers decide this job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.
- Out of that tank comes the contaminated mixture: your tank is emptied.
- The fuel lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.
- The fuel filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where your car has a workable one.
- Fresh diesel goes in, then the system is primed.
- The first start on clean diesel. Once priming is complete, the motor is started and our engineers confirm that it runs properly.
Your car has clean diesel running through it before our engineers leave. The vehicle returns to normal use straight away, and permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been caught soon.
Back on the road in Belliver after the fuel drain
- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it's been started on clean fuel.
- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop and ring us once more.
- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, so hold on to the documents.
- Next time, trust the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
