Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bellsquarry? Don't Start It
Don't fire up the engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, across Bellsquarry and the rest of West Lothian, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Call us and then we shall explain what follows after that before you try any more.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the vehicle — and do not trust it if it starts. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Flicking the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.
- Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we'd much rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Balmoral Gardens, switch the hazards on and leave it there.
- Before you dial, gather your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts EH54 9 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
- What got in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has run — the three answers settle your whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
How far you travelled is what we care about, not how long your vehicle has been standing — and this is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill-up on the trip in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat left at Livingston South since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a liquid drained of much of its protection. Phone and leave the car just where it is.
Diesel BMW 3 Series. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Morrisons. That's the call our engineers hope for, as the question under it's about amount through the pump instead of hours on the clock.
You'll be told to shift the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a misfuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond the filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Call us.
We rinse the lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already arrived at your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Citroen C3 parked up by Oozlum Bird a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave it off.
Drain it and put new diesel in — that is the tip you will get, usually from a person confident, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Volvo XC60 by 9th West Lothian (Dedridge) Scout Group and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What occurs next is the problem: the motor straight away draws the petrol still resting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and your car simply starting.
Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?
Forecourts are where the work usually begins, and where a large part of that closes. Still at Morrisons? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.
No place but the forecourt can this be stopped with the engine still untouched. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
The staff will usually happily roll it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Cranking the car to shift four vehicle lengths is not.
Bellsquarry and the places beside it
Being a residential suburb, Bellsquarry has a steady visit, whilst the areas close by go along on the same journey: Murieston and Adambrae, Dedridge and Almondvale, Polbeth.
Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most places around West Lothian have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Ring us to enquire rather than guessing, above all when you're on the border or anywhere the satnav misreads.
Look at this map for the ground shown here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers cover, and none of that requires your vehicle to move to us.
Stuck on the roadside near Bellsquarry
Some drivers find no sensible place to pull over whatsoever. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Carrick Gardens as you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.
Whether you stay by your car or step clear of it turns on whether sitting nearby is wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. A van coming to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the car has moved
under 5 miles from Bellsquarry, the local M8 is what matters here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Bellsquarry
- We check what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- Away goes the tainted mixture.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.
- Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- Our engineers turn it on and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.
Bellsquarry AdBlue removal is a separate problem
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — but this issue is not. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.
AdBlue removal in Bellsquarry has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We handle both.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Bellsquarry?
One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.
Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: common queries around Bellsquarry
I am on a forecourt around Bellsquarry. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we attend Morrisons Daily and the other forecourts around town routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more regularly than people assume.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Is your car still with you?
Leave the car turned off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
