Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Belmont?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Belmont and the rest of Durham. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Call us and we can explain what follows from here before you try any more.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Never start it. Started all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a few miles. People get that confused. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Broomside Lane? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult place works for us better than a started motor.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting DH1 2 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Three answers shape the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough amount involved, and whether it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is harmless, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked outside Durham this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled diluted diesel through your pump was the journey in. Call us before you go to collect it.

Move the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags at Belmont CofE (Controlled) Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past your filter toward your pump. Let everyone grumble. Give us a call.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the trip to TDC Garden, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the tight gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, call us.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Belmont Parish Hall or anywhere else, and don't restart the vehicle to find a better spot.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that's the advice you will get, typically from somebody confident, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Mercedes A-Class by Belmont War Memorial and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound reasonable. What occurs next is the problem: the engine immediately pulls the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the car being repaired and the car simply starting.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the job often kicks off, and where a large portion of that finishes. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, so if you're still at Shell that is usually where this drain takes place.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets halted with your motor never run, and no place else does it. Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the help. Starting it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Parts our vans reach around Belmont

These same runs get us to Carrville, Sherburn Grange, Gilesgate Moor, West Sherburn and Sherburn along with Belmont, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most towns around Durham have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. On a border, or anywhere your phone misreads? Call us to enquire instead of presuming.

The area the page covers is on our map. The car never needs to come to us. We operate over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck at the roadside anywhere around Belmont?

A chance to stop anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. A normal call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge of The Links or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Stay beside the vehicle when it's sensible to sit there, yet clear of the car when it isn't. Don't start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. However awkward the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under a mile out of Belmont, your A1(M) is what matters now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Belmont itself

Belmont is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Durham, situated near the River Wear in north-east England. Belmont sits at an elevation of around 90 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Belmont is close to nearby places such as Carrville, Sherburn Grange, and Gilesgate Moor, and is approximately 2.4 miles from the city of Durham. Belmont has a population of around 5201 residents.

When we reach you around Belmont: what happens

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • Your tank gets emptied completely.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what created the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • Our engineers start the car and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it's ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Belmont is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this problem underneath it is a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Belmont has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. We cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Belmont

One figure wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Belmont

Fuel drains on a Belmont petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done. We attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then leave it off. Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
