Belmont: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Belmont and the rest of East Sussex. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. We will show you what your next stage will be. Call us — it comes before everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Switching the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition be.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would rather drive to an awkward location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Pinders Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Get your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning TN35 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has fired — these three details decide the full visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

The job begins at the pump, mostly. Frequently the work finishes at one as well. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the station.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only setting this ends up caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Belmont

We're in car parks like the one at Aldi often, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height bar at the entrance, which decides whether a van can reach you at all. So say how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no room to work next to the Skoda Octavia, our technicians move it without the engine. That is not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of that tank toward the pump, and a motor shifted twice for a nicer space is silently a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone. It's twenty to nine at the gates of All Saints CofE Junior Academy, you are late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in your Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, fuel is delivered on demand, and a hurried drive asks for plenty of it.

A diesel Ford Focus parked in the car park outside Ashburnham arms with a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till someone takes it home. Park the vehicle there overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing degrades whilst it waits. What we'll ask about is if that trip there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left your diesel Audi A3 up by Social Club a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us then leave the car off. The short drive genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has arrived at the filter and your pump — which is why we purge the fuel lines instead of only emptying the tank.

Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up by St George's Churchyard that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.

Coverage in Belmont

The same rounds take us to Clive Vale, High Wickham, Halton, Old Town and Broomsgrove as well as Belmont, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around East Sussex, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. On a boundary, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Phone to enquire instead of guessing.

The map is the patch the page covers. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the car does not need to come to us.

Belmont: broken down wherever you parked

A chance to pull over anywhere safe does not fall to everyone. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Glenview Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Fine where you are? Stay by it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Don't start up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into your fuel system. However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under 25 miles from Belmont, your M20 is what counts now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit then switch off. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

Belmont itself

Belmont is a suburban area in East Sussex, situated on the southeastern coast of England, with an elevation of around 89 metres. Belmont lies approximately 54.7 miles from London and 32.9 miles from the city of Brighton and Hove, near neighbouring areas such as Clive Vale and High Wickham. Belmont has a population of around 3886 residents, predominantly living in terraced housing. Belmont is characterized by its coastal setting, with nearby settlements like Halton,

When our engineers arrive with you in Belmont: what we do

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out goes the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that started the problem.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Belmont?

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Belmont has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Belmont

What moves the figure is listed below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Belmont

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Belmont?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is the car still with you?

That engine remains off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
