Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Belmont?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Belmont and the remainder of South Ayrshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our technicians can show you what the following part is. Ring us — that comes ahead of everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't start the car — and don't depend on it if it fires up. That is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for several miles. It is not fine. It's grinding the fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd rather travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Nursery Road, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • Before you call, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning KA7 3 — that's what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been started. The answers determine all that follows.

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Much of the work starts at a forecourt, so a big portion of that ends up done at one. If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that's usually where this drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

A forecourt is the only setting this can be stopped before your motor has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Well worth doing. Cranking the car to move four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Belmont

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call we want sounds like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now shut off outside Spar.

A diesel Audi A4 sitting in the car park outside The Chase holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone takes it home. Park it overnight and phone us first thing. Nothing degrades while it stands. What our technicians will ask is whether the trip there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the sump.

Emptying your BMW 1 Series, changing the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, cleaning the lines, putting clean fuel through the entire system: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it sitting in your lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Castlehill Parish Church — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot we work, so the location itself is hardly ever the issue. A cramped parking bay beats a vehicle driven somewhere more handy.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 near Saint Paul's.

Cleared, not drained — that is what a diesel Kia Sportage which got as far as Mormon Church needs. Running a diesel puts the blend into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Belmont and the villages beside it

As a residential suburb, Belmont gets a frequent call, whilst the areas round about go along on that same round: Castlehill and Forehill, Masonhill and Kincaidston, Laigh Glengall.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across South Ayrshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Call us to check rather than guessing, especially where you are on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

That map outlines the patch the page includes. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car never needs to travel to us.

Belmont: stuck wherever you pulled up

Not everyone finds a decent spot to pull in. A common call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge of Belmont Road or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Out of the vehicle if it's not safe to wait there, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll bring our van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then read below

Here is where the local M77 matters, under 25 miles out of Belmont. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Do not restart it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible junction and turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

What follows when we reach you around Belmont

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The tank is emptied of it.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Belmont is a different problem

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Belmont has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Belmont pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Belmont motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Belmont petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the car off. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more commonly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Never turn the car on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
