Petrol in Diesel

Benson: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't fire up the engine. If the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Benson and the remainder of Oxfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us so our engineers shall tell you what follows next before you do anything else.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the vehicle. And once started, never believe it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We would sooner come to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on High Street, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • Before you phone, get your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning OX10 6 — that is what decides whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has fired — the three facts shape the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your injection pump in real quantity on the way in, and the drive back would about double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf outside Cholsey while the work happens, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Waitrose, somewhere in Benson? Then call us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to get out of the spot. Somebody comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile pulls very little, so these are often the simple jobs.

Move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Benson Church of England Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Started three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter towards the pump. Let people complain. Ring us.

Emptying the Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there's a workable one, rinsing the lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole circuit: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in the fuel lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Benson Library — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location we work, so the spot itself is hardly ever the trouble. A tight parking bay trumps a car driven somewhere more handy.

No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven again before somebody phones. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and your diesel Ford Kuga is now waiting by Saint Helen. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of an engine failing. Switch off. Call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Benson

On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

A large portion of this job ends up finished at a pump, as that's where it usually begins. Still at BP? Then that is usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

A filling station is the only place it can be stopped before your motor has fired. Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The staff will generally offer to wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not warrant starting the motor.

Do we serve your end of Benson?

Benson is a village, and our team are out to it and to the villages near it on the usual runs: Preston Crowmarsh, Rokemarsh, Roke, Crowmarsh Gifford and Ewelme.

Our engineers still come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places around Oxfordshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Call us and enquire rather than assuming, especially when you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

This map outlines the area the page covers. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Stopped on the roadside somewhere around Benson?

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to stop. A routine call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge of Chapel Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Never fire up your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to an awkward place, and that is no problem for us.

Driven it already? Stop, and read this

This is where the M40 counts, under 10 miles from Benson. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring changes.

Where is Benson?

Benson is a village in Oxfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Thames at an elevation of 54 metres. Benson sits in a rural area, with nearby villages including Preston Crowmarsh, Rokemarsh, and Roke, and is located approximately 11 miles from Oxford. Benson has a population of around 1818 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Benson is also within commuting distance of London, being around 42 miles from the city centre.

What comes next when we reach you around Benson

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • Our engineers flush the lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what created the trouble.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Benson AdBlue removal is a different job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — do not crank it — but the fault is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Benson page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Benson?

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Benson motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Benson, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off. It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Leave the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
