Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Betws? Don't Start It

Never turn on the motor. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Betws and the remainder of Carmarthenshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Contact us and we shall tell you what follows from here before you try anything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car — and don't depend on it if it fires up. This is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's grinding the fuel system while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would much rather get to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Parc Bwtrimawr, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SA18 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Three answers determine the entire job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough measure of it, plus if it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill on the trip in, and you realise close to eleven — by then the diesel Renault Megane has been standing at Pantyffynnon for three hours. Ring us then keep the car right where it is. The drive in is the bit that is key now, since diesel performs two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it protects its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump labouring on a fuel that had shed much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing we ask is how far you went, not how long your motor has been parked.

The call our technicians hope for sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now switched off outside Tesco. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, call us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel to demand — and a hurried morning run asks for plenty.

The components that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Risk the drive home from Pantyffynnon Social Club? Don't. Phone then leave the Peugeot 308 where it stands.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later. Then give us a call about the Mercedes A-Class, the diesel one, by Capel Newydd. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our technicians work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Betws

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

The job kicks off at a forecourt, generally. Frequently the work wraps up on site too. Still at Tesco? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

At a forecourt, this is halted with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Worth it. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? No.

Betws plus the towns beside it

As a residential suburb, Betws has a regular call, whilst the areas close by go with it on that same journey: Ammanford and Pantyffynnon, Tir-y-dail and Penybanc, Pontamman.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Carmarthenshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Call us to ask instead of assuming, especially if you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

That map is the patch this page covers. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.

Broken down by the roadside around Betws

The chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. A routine call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge on Caemawr or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Remain by the vehicle when it is sensible to sit there, but out of the vehicle if it isn't. Never fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system. We will send our van to a tricky location without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M4 counts, under 5 miles away from Betws. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

A bit about Betws

Betws is a suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 34 metres. Betws lies near the towns of Ammanford and Pantyffynnon, and is within commuting distance of Swansea, which is approximately 11.6 miles away. Betws has a population of around 2536 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Betws is also close to other nearby places such as Tir-y-dail, and is around 166.5 miles from London.

Our job around Betws, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • Your tank gets drained of it.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • We start the car and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

Betws AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — do not crank it — but this problem isn't. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Betws has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Betws

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Betws drivers

I am on a forecourt in Betws. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this happens. Regularly, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Clearing wrongly fuelled motors, Betws and the rest of Carmarthenshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
