Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bewbush?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Bewbush and the rest of West Sussex. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us before everything else happens, so you will see what follows next.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And if started, don't rely on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
- Switching the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Byrd Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
- The van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting RH11 8, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you dial.
- Three facts decide the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate quantity involved, plus whether anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Never run it home. The drive in has already pushed a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would roughly double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that is quicker. Our technicians do not need you standing over your car outside Ifield whilst we get it done, and we'd far rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.
We're in car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food a lot, and it is rarely the fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height bar at the entrance, which determines whether our van reaches you at all. So say how penned in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no space to work alongside that Renault Megane, we move it without the motor. That's not pedantry over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a car shuffled twice for a nicer space is gradually a worse job than one nobody touched.
The parts that should be getting oiled are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off just fine. Chance the drive home from The Windmill? Not a chance. Call us then leave the BMW 3 Series where it stands.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Audi A4 parked near Bewbush Community Centre hardly two streets on. Phone us, and leave the vehicle off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only emptying your tank.
Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to approve the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then give us a call about the Dacia Duster, the diesel one, by St Alban's. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a car, and it is something we check on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where this work mostly begins, and where a big chunk of that ends. Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the station.
Before your engine has run — a garage is the one location the mistake is halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key.
The staff will normally happily roll the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Parts we reach around Bewbush
As a residential suburb, Bewbush gets a regular visit, and its neighbours round about go with it on that same trip: Gossops Green and Broadfield, Ifield and Southgate, West Green.
Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of towns in West Sussex have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us to check instead of guessing, particularly if you're on a border or somewhere your phone gets wrong.
That map is the patch this page spans. Your vehicle does not need to come to us. Our technicians work over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Bewbush: broken down wherever you pulled up
Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Pegwell Close since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.
Out of the car while it isn't sensible to be inside, beside it if it is. Do not fire up your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system. We will bring the van to a tricky place without any bother, and for your car that is a lot better than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under 3 miles from Bewbush, the M23 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

What we do when we arrive with you in Bewbush
- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- The contaminated fuel is drawn from the tank.
- We rinse the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in the system isn't what created the trouble.
- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
- Our engineers start the car and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bewbush is a distinct matter
The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.
Both are ours. There's a separate Bewbush page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Bewbush?
What changes the price is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Bewbush drivers
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Bewbush?
Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this takes place. We attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off. It's salvageable far more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Switched off is how the car remains.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
