Petrol in Diesel

Bickington: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Bickington and the rest of Devon. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then our team can show you what follows next before you do anything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of that tank and into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would much rather get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Bickington Lodge, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting EX31 2 — that is what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and whether the car has started — these three details settle the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the drive back would close to double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf at Barnstaple whilst the work gets done, and we'd far rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Diesel Renault Clio. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside ALDI. That's the enquiry we like, as the point under it's about quantity through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that trip to Queen Elizabeth 2 Playing Field went, your tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Audi A4 went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

Three things help when you ring from close to Sticklepath Methodist Church: which side the filler is on, whether a van can park beside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the problem — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Ford Focus, change your filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, because by this point the worst of it is waiting in the lines instead of in the tank.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not your engine failing — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody rings. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now waiting near St Paul's Church. Switch the vehicle off and ring us.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?

Much of the work starts at a forecourt, meaning a large part of that is completed there. Still at Sainsbury's? Then that's usually where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

The forecourt is the single location this is spotted before your motor has run. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Bickington plus the areas next to it

Bickington is a rural village, so our team are out to the town and to the places near it on the same runs: Combrew, Muddlebridge, Brynsworthy Park, Roundswell and Brynsworthy.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all towns in Devon, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Call us to enquire instead of guessing — county lines above all, and wherever the satnav may get wrong.

Look at the map for the ground included on this page. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Bickington: stranded wherever you parked

Not everybody has a safe spot to pull over. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge on Holland Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Whether you sit with the car or step clear of it hangs on whether sitting nearby feels sensible. Don't start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the fuel system. We'll send our van to an inconvenient spot without any fuss, and for the car that's a lot better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull in, and see below

This is where your M5 matters, under 50 miles out of Bickington. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

About Bickington

Bickington is a village in Devon, situated inland at a low elevation of around 22 metres, and is located near the villages of Combrew and Muddlebridge. Bickington has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are the most predominant, and the village is close to the estate of Brynsworthy Park. Bickington is approximately 34.6 miles from the city of Exeter and around 174.2 miles from London, making it a rural community with some distance from major urban centres.

What comes next when our engineers reach you in Bickington

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
  • Your tank is drained of it.
  • We rinse the lines and clean the filter, so what is left in the fuel system isn't what started the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bickington is a different matter

The problem is not the same, though the first rule is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Bickington has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Bickington prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one price on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Bickington drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Bickington?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes. We visit BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more often than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
