Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Biddenden?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Biddenden or the rest of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before all else starts, so you'll know what comes from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Do not fire it up — and never believe it if it fires up. Here is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just can't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and moves off quite happily for several miles. It isn't all right. It is eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A car that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts TN27 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three replies shape the entire job: the stuff you put in, the approximate amount involved, and if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this work often begins, and where a large share of that finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that is usually where this drain gets done — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

The forecourt is the single place the mistake can be caught before your engine has started. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines together with the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers deal with it where the car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The staff will normally happily roll it out from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't merit starting it.

Coverage around Biddenden

Biddenden is a rural village, so our vans get out to the town and to the areas by it on the same journeys: Woolpack Corner, Curteis Corner, Goose Green, Standen and Fosten Green.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of places in Kent have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us and enquire instead of assuming — borders particularly, and wherever the satnav may get wrong.

The patch the page includes appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we work on, and none of it requires the car to come to us.

Somebody will urge you to move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside John Mayne Church of England Primary School is a hassle; the same car fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. Leave it, let everyone grumble, and ring us.

Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Biddenden Village Green, it is doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

The pump waits before the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off travels downstream with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Call us, then leave the diesel Dacia Duster where it's close to Biddenden Village Hall.

Rattling? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfuelled Mercedes E-Class, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near All Saints, and leave the restarting alone.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel BMW 1 Series is now waiting by Biddenden Vineyards. That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly rather than the motor failing — and since there's no warning light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven once more before somebody phones. Don't. Turn it off and call us.

Biddenden: broken down where you stopped

Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge on North Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Stay beside it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Do not start up the motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system. Our van heading to an awkward place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

Your M20 is the one which matters now, and it runs under 10 miles from Biddenden. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Our job around Biddenden, step by step

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Biddenden

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't crank it — yet the fault isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal around Biddenden has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Biddenden?

We can't put one figure on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Biddenden

Fuel drains on a Biddenden petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more frequently than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Keep it turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume.
