Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bidwell?

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Bidwell or the rest of Bedfordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. We can explain what the next move is. Contact us — this goes ahead of all else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, never believe it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Skye Gardens, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting LU5 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how many litres, and also if your car has fired. These three replies settle the whole call-out.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a large chunk of that finishes. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at Gulf that's normally where this drain gets done.

Nowhere else other than a garage can it be caught with the motor still untouched. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Well worth it. Firing it just for four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bidwell

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at light throttle uses little of it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan somewhere in Bidwell, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded outside Morrisons — ring us. Getting out of that bay is not worth a restart. That tank gets drained where it stands, the fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

Your pump isn't turning, so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Dunstablians RUFC, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn-out pump sheds passes onward with your fuel. Leave the BMW 1 Series by Brethren's Meeting Room and call us.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — close to Houghton Regis Community Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong.

Someone certain will tell you to drain it then put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Audi Q3 close to All Saints Parish Church and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is pull it back through the pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Call us. The circuit gets flushed, the filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that simply starts.

Will our engineers cover your end of Bidwell?

Bidwell is a rural hamlet, and so our technicians are out to the town and to anywhere around it on the same trips: Houghton Regis, Thorn, Tithe Farm, Parkside and Chalk Hill.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all places around Bedfordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your phone misreads? Contact us and ask rather than guessing.

This map outlines the patch the page spans. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Stranded by the roadside anywhere around Bidwell?

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull over. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Bedford Road as you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Out of the motor when it's not sensible to wait inside, with it if it is. Never restart it to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. Our van coming to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M1 comes into it — under 3 miles from Bidwell. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't start the car to reposition. It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

Bidwell itself

Bidwell is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Bedfordshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 984 residents. Bidwell sits at an elevation of 105 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Houghton Regis, Thorn, and Tithe Farm. Bidwell is located near the city of Milton Keynes, approximately 13 miles away, and is also within commuting distance to London, around 33 miles to the southeast. Bidwell's riverside setting provides a distinctive character to the hamlet.

Once our engineers get to you around Bidwell: what we do

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Your tank is cleared of it.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Once it's started, our engineers check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Bidwell AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Bidwell page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Bidwell?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Bidwell

Fuel drains on a Bidwell petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Bidwell and throughout Bedfordshire.
