Petrol in a Diesel Car in Birkdale: What Happens Now

Pause, then keep your motor off — not on, and not for a second to shift the car. Cleared then flushed, just where it sits: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else. Here's the order of things from here, anywhere you're in Birkdale.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

In this order, all before everything else:

  • Priming the fuel system draws petrol from the tank toward the components it harms, and switching your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So your keys come out, and your ignition remains off altogether.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.
  • Hazards on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • By hand, never on the engine: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the distance.
  • The first question you will be asked is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the till receipt says both. Keep it.

On the M58, under 10 miles from Birkdale, the next exit is the location to come off; elsewhere, the first sensible spot to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

Birkdale fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If it has never been started:

  • The petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • Where the vehicle stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.
  • This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

Motor run, however briefly?

  • From the tank, past the filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far the petrol has got.
  • Run it further and the petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having gone through the pump first.
  • Flushing your lines, the fuel filter seen to, and sometimes more: the job grows as the distance does.

That line falls there since diesel protects your high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing. As soon as it's pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Birkdale

A van that circles against a van that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting PR8 4 is the ideal start.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Cavendish Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Spar, for instance — and it's much quicker to find.
  • The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.
  • Which went in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Birkdale has a page just for that. So say.
  • Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • If it has run, how far and how heavily — and whether it has run at all.
  • Settle who owns the car before we turn up: some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is quicker beforehand.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Birkdale: what to do

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.
  • Nobody — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.
  • Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is hazardous — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
  • Even your radio or the windows aren't worth turning the ignition on for.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it has run. The replies decide the job, which is why our price comes after them but not before.
  • Out of that tank comes the tainted blend: your tank is emptied.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond your tank travels in the fuel lines once it ran, and the lines are rinsed to clear it.
  • Your filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where your car has a workable one.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • Our engineers fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the fuel system, then check that it's running correctly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, our engineers remain with it. It is very uncommon for a vehicle caught early to be left with long-term damage, and normal driving starts again right away.

Back on the road around Birkdale after your fuel drain

  • Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.
  • Hold on to your paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
