Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Birks? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Birks and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Contact us and then our engineers shall tell you what comes after that before you do anything else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it greases your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on New Royd Avenue, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning OL4 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three answers decide the entire call-out: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume of it, plus if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't take it home. The journey in has already pushed a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Megane, and the drive back would close to double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that is simpler. Our technicians don't need you standing over the vehicle at Greenfield whilst our technicians work, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.

Twenty to nine outside Hey-with-Zion Primary School, already late, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a frantic morning drive needs plenty.

Here's what a job in the car park by Church Inn typically looks like. Our engineers arrive at your car, ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three answers determine much of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, your lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our technicians start it, make sure it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by Holy Trinity, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and we work it out on the spot. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the fuel filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that got by Holy Trinity Parish Hall needs your system flushed, not emptied.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where the job often begins, and where a big share of it finishes. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's consent, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the one location the mistake gets spotted. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the assistance. Moving it four bays does not justify firing it.

Will our technicians cover your corner of Birks?

Birks is a residential suburb, and so we are out to the town and to anywhere around it on those same journeys: Cross Bank, Waterhead, Top o th Meadows, Taylor Green and Sun Hill.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us and enquire rather than presuming, above all where you are on a border or somewhere a satnav struggles with.

That map shows the area the page spans. The vehicle does not need to move to us. We work across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down by the kerbside around Birks

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Hollins Road as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car when it is not sensible to sit there, by it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. A technician heading to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 5 miles from Birks, the A627(M) is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition. It changes what we bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Birks?

Birks is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Manchester, near the lakeside and surrounded by nearby places such as Cross Bank and Waterhead. Birks sits at an elevation of 242 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Birks is located approximately 8.8 miles from Manchester city centre, making it a commuter-friendly location. Birks is also relatively close to other local areas, including Top o th Meadows.

When our technicians arrive with you around Birks: what we do

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
  • The tank is emptied of it.
  • Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the issue.
  • Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and we check that it's running properly.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Birks

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Birks page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Birks costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Birks drivers

Fuel drains on a Birks petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's permission our engineers attend Gulf and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Do not turn the car on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect.
