Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bishampton?

Don't turn on the motor. If the petrol is still in that tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across Bishampton and the remainder of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Call us and we can explain what comes from here before you try any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And if started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we'd sooner drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Babylon Lane, turn the hazards on then keep it there.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning WR10 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, plus if the motor has started. These three facts decide your whole call-out.

Don't take it home. The journey in has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would about double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that is handier. We don't need you hovering over the car outside Pershore while we work, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our engineers like runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now turned off outside Co-op Food.

A diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area at The Dolphin carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody takes it home. Park the vehicle there overnight then phone us first thing. Nothing deteriorates while it sits. What we'll ask about is whether that run there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and what does not burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past gaps instead, leaving your engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it passes through — that is the whole mechanism. It explains the ordinary Ian's Wood call too: a diesel Mercedes E-Class that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Throckmorton Chapelry needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Forecourts are where the work usually starts, and where a large portion of that ends. Still at Murco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the single location the mistake ends up caught. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the help. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Areas our team reach in Bishampton

Throckmorton, Abberton, Ab Lench, Naunton Beauchamp, Rous Lench — every one of these on our trips that bring us over to Bishampton too, a village.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most places in Worcestershire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Guessing is the thing to resist, particularly on the border or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Call us to ask.

The ground this page spans appears on this map. Every bit of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Stopped at the kerb somewhere around Bishampton?

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge of Main Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by the vehicle or move away from it depends on whether sitting in it feels wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

under 10 miles out of Bishampton, your M5 is what matters here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

About Bishampton

Bishampton is a village situated on the banks of the River Avon in Worcestershire, with a low elevation of around 41 metres. Bishampton lies near the cities of Worcester and Evesham, and is surrounded by other small villages such as Throckmorton and Abberton. Bishampton has a population of approximately 636 residents, living in predominantly detached housing. Bishampton is located about 92 miles west of London, making it a relatively rural community.

When our technicians arrive with you in Bishampton: what follows

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • That tank gets drained completely.
  • Our engineers clean the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bishampton

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Bishampton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Bishampton

We can't put one number on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Bishampton

Fuel drains on a Bishampton petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more regularly than motorists assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your car?

Keep it shut off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
