Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Black House Steading? Don't Start It

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, all over Black House Steading and the rest of East Lothian, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. One call to us is plenty: our engineers will show you what happens next. Make that straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you don't start it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Turning the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd sooner get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on A6093, switch your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode starting EH41 4 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Three replies decide your whole visit: the fuel you put in, the approximate measure of it, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the drive in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has sat at Longniddry for three hours. Call us and leave it where it is. What counts is the trip in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — protects your pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles ran the pump on a fluid stripped of much of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are till our technicians turn up.

Each restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a hassle, while the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will urge you to move the car out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. Leave it there, let everyone moan, then ring us.

Never chance it. The drive home from The Plough Tavern Hotel is quite possible, which is precisely the issue — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is meant to lubricate. Call us, then let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it sits.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the precision parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Dacia Duster drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how that trip to Backburn Wood went, then, and your tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and ring us.

A car you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol reaching the injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so new places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, close to Burns Family Well or not, and we'll come to the Volvo XC60.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

A good portion of the work is done at a pump, since that's where it mostly starts. The drain generally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's permission, that is a place we work, and routinely.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one location it is caught. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Black House Steading plus the places next to it

Being a small village, Black House Steading has a regular call, whilst its neighbours round about come with it on that same trip: Dovecote and Haddington, Hailes Terrace and Nungate, Samuelston.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most locations around East Lothian have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Contact us to ask rather than presuming, particularly if you're on a border or anywhere the satnav misreads.

See our map for the area included on this page. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians cover, and none of it needs the car to move to us.

Black House Steading: stranded wherever you stopped

Some people find no safe place to pull over at all. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Dovecote Way, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Fine there? Wait with it. Not okay? Step out and away from it. Never start it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into your fuel system. A technician coming to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has rolled

Here is where the local M8 counts, under 25 miles from Black House Steading. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't restart the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring differs.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Black House Steading

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • We drain your tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Once it is started, we make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Black House Steading

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Black House Steading page. Both are ours to handle.

Black House Steading pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Black House Steading motorists

Fuel drains on a Black House Steading petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Do not turn the engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
