Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Blackburn?

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Blackburn or the remainder of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us before all else starts, so you'll hear what follows after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you don't start the car, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Thundercliffe Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. An odd spot suits us better than a started motor.
  • Have your location ready before you dial. A postcode beginning S61 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, plus if the car has run. These three details shape the full visit.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Much of this job starts at the pump, so a big part of that ends up done on site. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Sainsbury's that's normally where this drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one spot the mistake is caught before the motor has run. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car sits.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Shifting it four bays doesn't merit firing the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Blackburn

Blackburn and the villages beside it

As a residential suburb, Blackburn gets a steady visit, and the areas round about go with it on the same journey: Hill Top and Meadow Hall, Low Wincobank and Grange Lane, Richmond Park.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all towns across South Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere the satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

The ground the page includes sits on our map. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Stuck by the roadside in Blackburn

The chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Baring Road as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of the vehicle while it isn't wise to wait inside, beside it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll take the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's far better than driving on.

A diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the car park at Royal Oak with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till somebody takes it home. Leave it overnight and call us next morning. Nothing degrades as it stands. What we'll ask is whether the drive there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever does not burn can work past the piston rings then into the sump.

Here is the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the ordinary Barber Wood call — a diesel Nissan Qashqai, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was built around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Leave the Audi A4 by Blackburn Youth Club and phone us. We're blunt about not driving on as a worn-out pump loses, and what it gives off passes downstream with the fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.

New places are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical instead of slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Yazier without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and miles is what settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and the diesel Vauxhall Insignia is parked up near Freddy. The motor is not giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours usually get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then phone us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under a mile out of Blackburn, your M1 is what matters now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring differs.

About Blackburn

Blackburn is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 69 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Blackburn lies close to the city of Sheffield, approximately 3.9 miles away, and is near other local places such as Hill Top and Meadow Hall. Blackburn is part of the larger Sheffield urban area, with London being around 143.6 miles to the south. Blackburn has a population of around 1134 residents.

Our call-out in Blackburn, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our engineers drain that tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Blackburn?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not fire it up — yet this problem isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Blackburn page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Blackburn

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Blackburn drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Blackburn, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been sucked through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Your engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
