Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Blackwell?
If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Blackwell or the remainder of West Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us and then we will explain what comes from here before you attempt anything else.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you never crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off also — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we would much rather drive to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Oakfield Way, put those hazards on then leave it there.
- Get your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning RH19 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has started. These three facts decide the entire job.
Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf left outside East Grinstead this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone us before you go to fetch the vehicle.
The phone call our engineers hope for sounds like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at Aldi. What we're really asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.
Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it won't run, so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while your high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. That is the trap, and it is why your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly usual coming back from Blackwell Primary School. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about, so nothing warns you. Ring us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.
Stop somewhere sensible, switch off and phone us. Happy on the way out to Stonequarry Wood, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Mercedes E-Class travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — close to Jubilee Community Centre or anywhere at all. Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
It kicks off at a forecourt, generally. Often enough the work finishes there as well. Still at JET? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.
Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the only location it ends up stopped. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle is.
The attendants will normally help you push it away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.
Parts our vans reach near Blackwell
Stonequarry, Baldwins Hill, East Grinstead, Dormans Park, North End — all of these on the runs that bring us out to Blackwell itself, a residential suburb.
If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all locations across West Sussex, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Call us to enquire instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your satnav may struggle with.
Check this map for the ground included on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory we work on, and none of it requires your car to move to us.
Stranded at the roadside somewhere around Blackwell?
Not everybody has the chance to pull over anywhere suitable. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge beside Blackwell Farm Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.
Whether you remain by the motor or stand away from it depends on whether staying there feels wise. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.
Run it already? Pull over, and read below
under 10 miles out of Blackwell, the M23 is what matters now. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
Never restart it to move it. Get off at the first sensible exit and switch off. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.
Where's Blackwell?
Blackwell is a suburban area in West Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of 119 metres, approximately 26 miles from London. Blackwell lies near several nearby places, including Stonequarry, Baldwins Hill, and East Grinstead, and is close to the city of Brighton and Hove. Blackwell is part of the wider South East region, with its residents commuting to nearby cities for work and leisure.
Once our engineers reach you around Blackwell: what we do
- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
- Our technicians empty that tank of all the polluted mixture.
- Our technicians rinse the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
- Our engineers pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running correctly.
From there, you're ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Blackwell?
The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue in its place.
AdBlue removal around Blackwell has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.
Blackwell prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Our technicians can't put one price on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank holds.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Blackwell
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Blackwell?
Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the engine shut off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
