Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Blakelaw?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Blakelaw and the rest of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us and then our engineers will tell you what happens next before you do much else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Flicking your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- We would much rather drive to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Pooley Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
- The van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts NE5 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
- What got in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has run — these three facts settle the full visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
How far you drove is what we query, not how long your car has been stood — and here is why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed top-up on the road in, the realisation coming at about eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane sitting at Blaydon since quarter past eight means those few miles were covered with the pump working on a liquid robbed of much of its protection. Phone us then leave it right where it stands.
The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to King George's Field, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.
Seldom the problem, the location. On-street is the commonest location we work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from close to Tyneside Badminton Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Dacia Duster gets cleared, your filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines purged and fresh fuel put through the full circuit — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not your tank.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres resting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 near Blakelaw Community Church.
No warning light exists for this, which is why cars in that position typically get driven a second time before anybody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Volkswagen Touran is now resting close to English Martyrs Church. Deadness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly instead of an engine failing. Turn off. Phone us.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
A big chunk of this work gets completed at the pump, as that's where it usually kicks off. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.
No place except a garage can it be caught with your engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.
The attendants will usually offer to wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Rolling the car four lengths doesn't justify firing it.
Can we serve your part of Blakelaw?
Being a residential suburb, Blakelaw sees a steady visit, while the villages nearby come with it on the same round: East Denton and Cowgate, Kenton Bar and Westerhope, Fenham.
We do come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most places around Tyne and Wear, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Phone and ask instead of guessing.
Look at our map for the area shown here. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.
Stranded by the kerb somewhere in Blakelaw?
Not everybody has a safe place to pull over. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Dewley Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.
Safe where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no bother for us.
Driven it already? Stop, and read this
under 3 miles from Blakelaw, the Central Motorway East is what counts here. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first junction that is safe, pull up there, and never restart it to reposition. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.

What we do when our engineers get to you in Blakelaw
- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- That tank gets emptied completely.
- We clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.
- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
- After it's started, we check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
Then it's ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Blakelaw is a different job
The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.
We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Blakelaw has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.
Blakelaw prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What changes the price is listed below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Blakelaw drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Blakelaw petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers attend Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the car off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Leave it turned off.
Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
Throughout Tyne and Wear and in Blakelaw: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
