Petrol in Diesel

Blakeney Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Blakeney Hill and the remainder of Gloucestershire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Phone and then we shall tell you what comes next before you try any more.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically can't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Hitchings? Hazards on, and leave it there. An odd place suits us better than a started motor.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning GL15 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, and also if the car has started. These three facts settle the full job.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A good chunk of this job is completed at a forecourt, as that's where it often begins. Still at Co-op? Then that's typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A filling station is the single place the mistake gets caught before the motor has run. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Blakeney Hill plus the villages beside it

The same trips take us to Blakeney, Nibley Green, Brains Green, Viney Hill and Bledisloe besides Blakeney Hill, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. Those places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places in Gloucestershire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Phone and enquire instead of presuming, especially if you're on a boundary or anywhere your satnav misreads.

The ground the page includes sits on the map. The lot is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

Move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Blakeney Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward the pump. Let everyone complain. Call us.

Don't risk it. The trip home from The King's Head is perfectly possible, which is exactly the problem — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, and let the BMW 5 Series stay where it sits.

Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever the diesel Ford Kuga did on the way to Cockshoot Wood, it's doing none of it now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than slapdash. New places see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up near All Saints without thinking, in a diesel Hyundai Tucson you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles determines how much petrol reaches the injectors.

Cleared, not cleared — that's what a diesel Kia Ceed which got as far as Exposed Roman Road needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Stranded at the roadside near Blakeney Hill

Not everybody finds a sensible place to pull in. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Cinderford Road as you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Sit beside the car when it's wise to wait inside, and clear of it if it isn't. Do not fire up the engine to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into your fuel system. A technician heading to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it's much better for your car than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 10 miles out of Blakeney Hill, the local M5 is what matters now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and don't restart the car to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in our van.

A little about Blakeney Hill

Blakeney Hill is a suburban area located near the coast in Gloucestershire, with Blakeney Hill sitting at an elevation of 53 metres above sea level. Blakeney Hill is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature. Blakeney Hill is situated near the village of Blakeney and other nearby places such as Nibley Green and Brains Green, and is approximately 12 miles from Gloucester.

Our visit around Blakeney Hill, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away comes the contaminated mixture.
  • Our technicians flush the lines and clean the filter, so what's left in the system is not what started the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Blakeney Hill

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Blakeney Hill has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Blakeney Hill pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Blakeney Hill motorists

Fuel drains on a Blakeney Hill petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this happens. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Central Garage, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Keep it turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
