The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Blaxton
Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your motor stays off. Pause there. Cleared and cleaned, just where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple depends on the minutes to come more than on anything else. From now on, step by step, wherever you are in Blaxton:
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off
Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.
- The keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the components it damages. Keep the vehicle off altogether.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mix.
- Visibility comes first beside moving traffic: switch the hazard lights on, and only then think about everything else.
- Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the way.
- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that's where our first question starts. Do not bin it.
If you were still on the move when you realised, stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M18, under 3 miles from Blaxton, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.
Each Blaxton fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?
What happens after this turns on one answer, and just one.
Not run, not even briefly:
- That petrol is still inside that tank and nowhere else.
- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally all of that.
- No position is better, and it is why the first stage counts so much.
If your engine has been run, even briefly:
- The lines and the filter already hold petrol drawn from that tank.
- On a longer run it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.
- The farther it went, the larger the job — the fuel lines, the filter, and sometimes more besides.
The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.
Calling about petrol in a diesel from Blaxton: what to have ready
Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.
- Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning DN9 3 is the ideal start.
- Give the road — Station Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Spar, and it's easy.
- The car. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.
- Tell us which went in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Blaxton.
- The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
- If it's run, how far plus how heavily — and whether it's run at all.
- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire and company contracts — so it is quicker to settle whose car it is before we arrive.
Call 0333 366 0103 next. Writing to works as well if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.
Blaxton fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
In the wait, the harm comes from kindly meant help — so these count.
- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- A kind passer-by does not fire it up. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or moving it a few yards.
- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
- No DIY draining. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond the tank.
- Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.
When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step
- First, three questions: which fuel went in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers shape the job, so our quote follows them.
- Next the tank is cleared, so the polluted fuel comes out.
- The lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and your lines are holding it.
- Then the filter: swapped where there's a usable one, cleared where there is not.
- Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
- The start-up. With fresh diesel in and your system bled, it is fired up and checked to be sure it runs smoothly.
Only once it's running on fresh diesel do we head off. When it has been caught early, lasting damage is very rare, and your car returns to normal driving straight away.
Back on the road in Blaxton after your fuel drain
- Started on new diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.
- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and call us back.
- The documents covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
