Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Blean? Don't Start It

With that tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Blean and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. A single ring to us will be enough: we can explain what follows next. Do that straight away.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you do not start the vehicle, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Tyler Hill Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • The van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts CT2 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you dial.
  • Three facts settle the entire visit: the liquid you poured in, the rough quantity involved, plus if it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly starts, and where a big portion of that finishes. Still at BP? Then that's generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere other than the forecourt can the mistake be caught with the engine still unrun. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key.

The staff will usually help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Firing it just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Blean plus the towns near it

Blean is a village, and so our team get out to the town and to the villages around it on those same journeys: Honey Hill, Rough Common, Tyler Hill, Denstroude and Pean Hill.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns in Kent, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Contact us and enquire rather than assuming, particularly when you're on a border or anywhere a satnav can't find.

The area this page covers is on the map. Your car never needs to travel to us. We operate throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Blean Primary School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone. Three miles in your Ford Focus feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning run asks for plenty.

Risk the drive home from The Hare at Blean? Not a chance. It will start and it will pull away just fine, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves generally whilst wearing the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Mercedes C-Class and ring us.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever happened on the way to Keir's Meadow in that diesel Dacia Duster is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of it.

Hardly ever the issue, the spot. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from near Blean Village Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets emptied, the filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of it is in the lines, not the tank.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and your diesel Audi Q3 is parked up near Church of St. Gabriel. Your engine isn't giving up — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so vehicles like yours typically get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and call us.

Blean: stuck where you pulled up

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge on Westfield or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Wait with your car if it's sensible to sit in it, and clear of it if it isn't. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

Here is where your M2 matters, under 5 miles out of Blean. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and do not start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

Blean itself

Blean is a small village situated on the River Stour in Kent, with a population of around 700 people. Blean sits near the city of Canterbury, approximately 2.4 miles away, and is characterized by its detached housing stock. Blean is located in a riverside setting, with an elevation of around 80 metres, and is close to nearby places such as Honey Hill and Rough Common. Blean is also within commuting distance to London, being around 52.3 miles away.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Blean

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Your tank gets emptied of it.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • We pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Blean AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Blean page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Blean

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Blean drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Blean?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.

Emptying wrongly fuelled vehicles, Blean and the rest of Kent, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
