Bloomfield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never start your engine. While the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Bloomfield and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Ring us before everything else starts, so you will hear what comes after that.
Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.
- Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Bloomfield, put the hazards on and keep it there.
- Get your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting DG1 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
- What was put in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has run — the three details decide the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt
A fair chunk of the work is done at a forecourt, as that is where it mostly begins. Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it happens. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.
The forecourt is the one place it gets spotted before your engine has started. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.
The staff will usually happily move it clear of the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.
Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Tesco now. Time gone by isn't the thing we need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.
Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the run to Dalscone Farm Fun, look at that tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Mercedes C-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, phone us.
About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A3 left by David Keswick Athletic Centre barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence purging the lines rather than only clearing that tank.
Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfuelled BMW 5 Series, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to Dumfries Sports Club, and leave the restarting alone.
By now the tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into your filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got near Lochthorne Library wants its circuit flushed. Emptying isn't the same thing.
Areas our team reach in Bloomfield
Bloomfield is a residential suburb, and so we head out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual rounds: The Grove, Nunholm, Marchmount, Greystone and Greenbrae.
If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Dumfries and Galloway, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Phone and ask rather than presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever your phone can misread.
Look at this map for the area included here. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the car doesn't need to move to us.
Stuck on the kerbside around Bloomfield
Some drivers have no sensible spot to pull over at all. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside A701 or in a lay-by with the hazards going.
Out of the motor while it's not wise to be there, with it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However inconvenient the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than pressing on.
Driven it already? Stop, and see below
under 10 miles out of Bloomfield, the A74(M) is what counts now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring differs.
Bloomfield itself
Bloomfield is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Dumfries and Galloway, with a relatively low elevation of 18 metres. Bloomfield lies near several other local places, including The Grove, Nunholm, and Marchmount. Bloomfield is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Bloomfield is located approximately 29 miles from Carlisle, the nearest city.
What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Bloomfield
- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
- That tank gets emptied of everything.
- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
- The engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From that point, you are ready to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.
Bloomfield AdBlue removal is a distinct job
The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Bloomfield has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Bloomfield
One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel queries from Bloomfield motorists
Fuel drains on a Bloomfield petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Never switch it back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
