Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bloomfield? Don't Start It

If you have not started your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Bloomfield or the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. We shall tell you what the following step will be. Contact us — that goes before everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Don't start the vehicle — and do not trust it when it runs. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just can't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Bloomfield Road? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A difficult location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Get your location ready before you phone. A postcode that starts BA2 2 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Three replies settle your whole call-out: the liquid you put in, the approximate volume of it, plus if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Bath Spa this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Ring us before you go to fetch the vehicle.

A diesel Audi A4 parked in the parking area by The Devonshire Arms with a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park it there overnight and call us in the morning. Nothing degrades whilst it sits. What our technicians will ask about is if that drive there was brief and chilly, as that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever won't burn can work past the piston rings and into the oil.

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and phone us. Happy on the way out to Bloomfield Bowls Club, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel leaks past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Ford Focus went, the less of that pressure it held.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by St Luke's. For a diesel Dacia Duster whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get cleaned and not just that tank cleared.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor failing — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven again before anybody phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Citroen C3 now resting by Bruton Community Hall. Switch the vehicle off then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bloomfield

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this work often starts, and where a good portion of that finishes. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

No place but the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? No.

Coverage around Bloomfield

Bear Flat, Moorlands, Beechen Cliff, Fox Hill, Lyncombe Vale — each of those on the runs that bring us across to Bloomfield itself, a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of places across Somerset, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing at all about if our engineers come. Near the border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Ring us and enquire rather than presuming.

That map outlines the area the page spans. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that requires the vehicle to move to us.

Stranded by the kerbside in Bloomfield

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere safe. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge on Hatfield Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Okay where you are? Wait beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Don't start up your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. A van coming to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

Here is where your M4 matters, under 10 miles from Bloomfield. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

What our technicians do when our engineers reach you around Bloomfield

  • Our technicians check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn out of that tank.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • When it is started, we check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Bloomfield?

Don't crank it: that first step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the protection the system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Bloomfield page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Bloomfield?

What moves the price is set out below, since the job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Bloomfield

Fuel drains on a Bloomfield petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable much more regularly than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Bloomfield and across Somerset.
