Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bowgreave?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Bowgreave or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. One ring to us is sufficient: we shall tell you what comes next. Make that straight away.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into just those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Our team would rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Gryersdale Drive, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting PR3 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • Three facts decide the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate volume of it, plus whether it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A large part of the job gets done at a forecourt, because that is where it usually kicks off. Still at R Dewhurst Coal Merchant? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere except the forecourt can it be halted with the engine still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the help. Shifting the car four bays doesn't justify cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bowgreave

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Sainsbury's now. Time gone by is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

Twenty to nine outside St Mary and St Michael's Catholic Primary School, Garstang, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel on demand — and a frantic morning run demands plenty.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Garstang Golf Course in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Since the pump is upstream of your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it gives off on with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Mercedes C-Class by Catterall Village Hall.

What occurs next is the issue. The motor at once draws the petrol still sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, someone confident will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, because do it to a diesel Audi A6 parked up, Catterall and Kirkland Memorial Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush the circuit and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, and that's the difference between the car being repaired and your car simply starting.

Will our technicians cover your side of Bowgreave?

Bruna Hill, Catterall, Bonds, Nook, Stubbins — every one of them on our journeys that carry us out to Bowgreave as well, a village.

There are pages for nearly all towns across Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Ring us to check instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever your satnav might struggle with.

Use the map for the patch included on this page. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not move your car anywhere.

Roadside stops in Bowgreave

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Elm Close, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Fine right there? Stay beside it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under a mile out of Bowgreave, the local M6 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction then turn off. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

Bowgreave itself

Bowgreave is a small village in Lancashire, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 23 metres. Bowgreave lies near the city of Preston, approximately 9 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Bruna Hill and Catterall. Bowgreave has a population of around 613 people and predominantly features detached housing.

Our call-out in Bowgreave, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • That tank is cleared of everything.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • Your engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Bowgreave AdBlue removal is a separate problem

Do not crank it: that opening instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Bowgreave page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Bowgreave

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Bowgreave drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Bowgreave petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It's fixable much more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Never switch it back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
