Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Boxgrove? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Boxgrove and the rest of West Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us and then our technicians shall show you what comes from here before you do anything else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd rather come to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Church Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Before you phone, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning PO18 0 — that's what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • What was put in, about how much, and if the motor has fired — those three details shape the whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning run labouring on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting at Chichester till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that did plenty, which is why the question our engineers ask is about mileage not time. Call us. Keep the car exactly where it is.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at easy throttle uses little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere around Boxgrove, a boot full of shopping, and you sat at Co-op Food — phone us. Exiting that spot isn't worth another start. The tank gets emptied where it stands, your fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and you drive away.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone us. It is twenty to nine outside Boxgrove CofE Primary School, you're late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel gets metered to demand, and a frantic run asks for plenty of it.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park outside Anglesey Arms, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our technicians reach your car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Leave the Vauxhall Astra close to Boxgrove Priory then phone us. We're blunt about not driving on as a worn pump sheds, and what it sheds moves downstream with the fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Boxgrove

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of the job begins at the pump, so a fair chunk of it ends up finished on site. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that's generally where this drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one spot it gets halted before your motor has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Starting it over four car lengths? Never.

Do our engineers serve your corner of Boxgrove?

Boxgrove is a rural village, so we head out to it and to the villages around it on those same runs: Halnaker, Tangmere, Strettington, East Hampnett and Crockerhill.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all places around West Sussex, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. On a boundary, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Call us to enquire instead of presuming.

Use this map for the patch included here. The lot is ground our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.

Stuck at the roadside anywhere around Boxgrove?

Not everybody has the chance to pull over somewhere suitable. Set off, then noticed? Finished up along the verge of Crouch Cross Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Safe right there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. A van driving to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where your Waterlooville Bypass comes in — under 15 miles from Boxgrove. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

Where is Boxgrove?

Boxgrove is a small village in West Sussex, situated near the city of Chichester and close to the villages of Halnaker and Tangmere. Boxgrove sits in a low-lying area at an elevation of around 26 metres, with a mix of agricultural land and residential areas. Boxgrove has a population of approximately 667 people, with a predominance of detached housing. Boxgrove is located about 51 miles from London, making it a commuter village with easy access to the capital.

When our engineers reach you around Boxgrove: what happens

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • Your tank is drained of everything.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Once it is started, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Boxgrove AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault beneath it's a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Boxgrove has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Boxgrove costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Boxgrove drivers

Fuel drains on a Boxgrove petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more frequently than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
