Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brackmills?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Brackmills and the remainder of Northamptonshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Phone before anything else begins, so you'll see what happens after that.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for just those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Salthouse Road, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting NN4 7 — that's what decides whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Three replies shape the full call-out: the stuff you put in, the ballpark amount of it, plus if it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the drive in, and you realise around eleven — by then the diesel Peugeot 308 has been parked at Northampton for three hours. Phone us and leave the vehicle just where it sits. The trip in is the part that is key here, as diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fuel that had lost a great deal of the protection it is made for — which is why the question our technicians ask is how far you went, not how long the motor has been standing.

Car parks like the one outside One Stop are a spot our technicians attend all the time, and your fuel is rarely the complicated part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit on the way in that determines whether our van can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is pointing. Where our engineers can't work beside your diesel Nissan Qashqai we will shift the car without starting it — and that isn't pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of that mix out of that tank and on to your pump, so a car moved twice into a roomier space has quietly become a worse job than one left just where it stopped.

The components that should be getting protected are grinding instead, and the car gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off quite happily. Risk the journey home from The Britannia? Don't. Call us and leave the Mercedes C-Class where it sits.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, because a diesel Dacia Duster parked outside Brackmills Country Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than afterwards. Then call us about the Citroen C3, the diesel one, near White Water Centre. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it is something our technicians work out on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job mostly begins, and where a good share of that finishes. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the one setting this ends up spotted. Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Worth it. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Areas our vans cover around Brackmills

Great Houghton, Hardingstone, Wootton, Abington Vale, Abington — each of these on our trips that take us over to Brackmills too, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. Those places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns in Northamptonshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Call us to enquire rather than presuming.

That map is the area this page covers. All of it is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns in Brackmills

A chance to stop somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge on Harrowden Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Safe there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Never restart it to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read below

Here is where the M1 matters, under 3 miles out of Brackmills. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible junction then switch off. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Our visit around Brackmills, step by step

  • The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Out comes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the trouble.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • Once it's turned on, we confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Brackmills

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never crank it — yet this problem isn't. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Brackmills page. Both are ours to deal with.

Brackmills prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Brackmills motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Brackmills. Can you drain the car here?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Shut off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Brackmills and throughout Northamptonshire.
