Braedale: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Braedale or the remainder of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single call our way will be plenty: our engineers shall tell you what follows from here. Make it first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Never start it. Started regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Parkside Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • A van turning up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting ML1 3, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you dial.
  • Three replies determine your whole visit: the stuff you put in, the approximate amount involved, and if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where the work often begins, and where a big share of it ends. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the station's permission, that's somewhere we work, and often.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one setting the mistake gets spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Braedale

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Aldi, somewhere in Braedale? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to exit that bay. Somebody heads your way. Tank emptied, fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these are often the simple cases.

Twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, ring us. Three miles in the Audi A4 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a frantic morning dash asks for plenty.

Park it there overnight. Phone in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus parked in the parking area by The Brass Button worsens as it stands, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The query we bring is about the trip there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the engine oil.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 208 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Scottish Rowing Centre or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better location.

The fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the damage rests by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that made it close to Piper Alpha Memorial needs your system cleared rather than drained.

Do we reach your side of Braedale?

Braedale is a residential suburb, so our vans are out to the town and to anywhere around it on the same runs: North Motherwell, Motherwell, Knowetop, Forgewood and Hamilton.

There are separate pages for nearly all places in North Lanarkshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing at all about if our engineers come. On a border, or anywhere your phone can't find? Ring us to ask rather than assuming.

The patch this page covers is on the map. Every bit of that is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring your vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside stops in Braedale

Some people find no sensible spot to stop whatsoever. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Neilsland Drive as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay by the motor or keep clear of it hangs on if staying in it feels sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Your M74 is the one which matters now, and it sits under a mile from Braedale. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

A bit about Braedale

Braedale is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with an elevation of around 45 metres. Braedale lies approximately 10 miles east of Glasgow and is part of the larger Motherwell area, which includes nearby North Motherwell and Knowetop. Braedale has a population of around 4326 people and predominantly features semi-detached housing. Braedale is located near the town of Motherwell, with Glasgow being the nearest major city.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Braedale

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our technicians start the car and check it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Braedale is a distinct matter

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — never crank it — yet this problem isn't. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Braedale page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Braedale

What changes the figure is set out below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Things we get about petrol in diesel around Braedale

At a petrol station in Braedale, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Gulf is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
