Brandon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never turn on the motor. While the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Brandon and the rest of Durham, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone before anything else starts, so you'll know what happens next.
What to try next about petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the car. Fired up anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, so the person stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
- Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Grey Ridges, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning DH7 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
- What went in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has fired — the three facts settle the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a big chunk of that closes. If you're still at the forecourt at Jet, that is normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.
No place but a garage can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unstarted. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where the car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.
Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the help. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? No.
Our technicians will come to you, empty that tank, rinse those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Clio around Brandon and you're stranded at Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, phone — and never crank it again to exit the bay. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little diesel, so those tend to be the straightforward ones.
A passer-by will tell you to move the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags at Brandon Primary Academy is a hassle; the same vehicle started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. Stay put, let people moan, then phone us.
Leave it overnight. Phone us next morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus standing in the parking area outside Bay Horse by Watson worsens whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains an easy one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The query our engineers bring is about the trip there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol burns least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.
About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra parked close to Brandon Library barely two streets on. Ring us, then leave the vehicle off. A short distance does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing the lines rather than only emptying the tank.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mix knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost nobody knows how full the tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and we work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Mercedes A-Class near St Andrews Methodist Church.
Brandon plus the places near it
Those same rounds carry us to Browney, Meadowfield, Brandon Village, Langley Moor and Littleburn as well as Brandon, which is a rural village.
If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for most locations across Durham, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours. Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on a boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles. Ring us and enquire.
Use our map for the ground covered on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory our technicians cover, and none of that needs your car to come to us.
Brandon: broken down wherever you stopped
Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge on Oak Tree Mews, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us instead of a rare one.
Clear of your car while it is not wise to be inside, with it when it is. Do not fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into the system. A technician coming to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
This is where your A1(M) counts, under 5 miles out of Brandon. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what we bring.
Brandon itself
Brandon is a village in County Durham, situated inland near the city of Durham, with Brandon being close to the nearby settlements of Browney and Meadowfield. Brandon sits at an elevation of around 120 metres, and its location is approximately 2.6 miles from Durham city centre. Brandon has a population of around 3185 people, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type in the area.
When our technicians get to you around Brandon: what happens
- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
- The contaminated fuel comes from your tank.
- What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
- When it is started, we check it runs smoothly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.
Brandon AdBlue removal is a distinct job
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while this issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Brandon page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Brandon
We can't put one figure on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank takes.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?
Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel questions from Brandon motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Brandon?
Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend pulled through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more often than drivers assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
That engine remains off.
Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
Throughout Durham and around Brandon: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
